Arts and Humanities Council of Falls Church Meeting August 15, 2019 Falls Church Arts Minutes Members Present: Corey Jannicelli, Barb Cram, Ron Anzalone, Ed Henderson, Sally Cole, Marybeth Connelly, Rosemary Ziskind, Stephanie Oppenheimer Guests: Keith Thurston (TLLCF), Nikki Henderson (Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation), Jeff Hollern (Planning Department), Marian Stone (Community member), Lyn Sherlock (Falls Church DAR) Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Barb Cram at 9:30 am. Minutes: Meeting minutes from July approved TLCCF Report: o None Development Update:  Businesses o Thompson Italian Restaurant now open o New restaurants in Giant shopping plaza includes Plaka Grill, Jersey Mikes, dumpling restaurant and vegetarian restaurant  High School Project o Work has begun and is currently on schedule  Founders Row o Construction is moving forward and developers will be moving forward with mural planning in September o Update on Founders Row was provided by Jeff Hollern, City Planner  Fellows Purchase o HARB/ Historical Commission want to connect on architectural salvage  Want to video & record site  Review specimen trees to be saved Old Business: o Public Art Policy Guidelines  Planning Department is meeting to review the documents and provide recommendations back to the A&HC. 1   The next step is for the Public Art Policy sub-committee to reconvene to review the Planning Departments feedback. Meeting will be open to all A&HC members.  Public Art Policy should also be added to the City Council and Planning Commission calendar for review. o Goal created to start process in September for new public art in Chambers o Question on whether tree sculptures in Cherry Hill Park should have gone through the Arts & Humanities Council for review o Heritage Days  Barb Cram shared a new logo option  Recommendation on making logo into a circle to look like a seal of approval o Year of the Women  Hoping to host events on women and suffrage through August 2020  Look for a Year of the Women booth at Fall Festival  Recommending a display in City Hall around women rights and voting New Business:  None Roundtable:  Sept 21 – Girl Scout Day: Making Games, 1pm – 3pm  Sept 25 – Home School Program: Life on a 19th Century Farm 10 am  The Falls Church Education Foundation GMHS PTSA and GMHS Athletic Boosters are raising funds for 2 kiosks inside and a Legacy Garden/Grove outside to commemorate individuals, teams, and events that are important in the history of GMHS.  Sept 13 - Lindy is turning 80 and the City Council declared September 13 as Lindy Hockenberry Day in the City of Falls Church in recognition of her years of service, including on the Arts & Humanities Council.  Sept 14 -Cherry Hill Farmhouse will extended tour hours for Fall Festival from 10 am - 2 pm  Falls Church Egypt exhibit is finishing up  FCTV archives include past interviews with important community members that need to be transferred to a portable hard drive.  Library board meets with Planning department in Sept to discuss next steps for the renovation project  Library local history room will be closing in preparation of the renovation  Aug 20 - Chamber August Luncheon at Eden Center  Sept 14 – Chamber hosts booth at Fall Festival  Sept 17 – Chamber Sept Luncheon at Italian Café with speakers Wyatt Shield and EDA Chair Bob Young  Nov 15 - Chamber Gala at State Theatre 2   Ed Henderson said he is presenting at Falls Church High School professional development and would like to get into FCCPS schools.  Ed Henderson would like to locate the Time Capsule/Cornerstone of the old Falls Church HS that was on Cherry and Hillwood until its demolition in the 1990s.  October 5 – A Passion for Poe – Victorian Society hosts tea in memory of Edgar Allan Poe  October 25 – A Tribute to Edgar Allan Poe – Literary Evening hosted by Victorian Society at Cherry Hill Farmhouse Adjourn Meeting was adjourned by at 11:11 am Next Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 19 at 9:30 am at City Hall, Dogwood Room Submitted: By Corey Jannicelli 3
