Regular Meeting of Advisory Board Recreation and Parks Held at the Falls Church Community Center, Kenneth R. Burnett Building 223 Little Falls Street, Falls Church, Virginia 22046 Minutes September 4, 2019 1. Call To Order Charley O’Hara called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. Members present were Charley O’Hara, Bill Brew, Kathy Chandler, Kim Hicks, City Council Liaison Letty Hardi. Staff members present include Danny Schlitt, Director of Recreation and Parks, Janelle Kirby, and Amy Youngs. 2. Receipt of Public Petitions and Board Members Petitions None 3. Minutes for Approval: June 5, 2019 Bill Brew motioned to approve minutes. Kim Hicks seconded the motion. 4. Election of Officers Charley O’Hara nominated by Bill Brew seconded by Kathy Chandler. Motioned carried 3-0 and 1 abstention. Leslie Rye nominated by Bill Brew for Vice Chair. Kim seconded it. Motioned carried 4- 0. 5. Recreation Director’s Report - Summer Camps – Although construction started the same week as summer camps, there was a great turnout with strong staff. There were 5,001 campers enrolled this year with 241 programs offered. *Suggestion from Charley O’Hara: Thank Vendors and Staff by giving great feedback about the summer camps. Great way to let the community know about the turnout. - Annual Clean Week started two weeks ago. - Gym color changed back to orange. Gym closed longer than expected due to paint. Gym opened back up on Sunday 09/08/19. - Fall Church Festival – September 14th; Scarlett’s first - 16 restaurants, Vendor spaces are full, Fox 5 Zip Trip advertised the event - Next month meeting, Developer is asking for input from Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks. Mention of moving the meeting to Thursday, October 3rd instead of having on Wednesday, October 2nd. *Kathy Chandler asked about training on how to respond to crisis that may occur in the community center. Danny noted nothing has been done yet but once phones were fixed then the safety issue would be addressed. 6. New Business None 7. Old Business a. Big Chimney Park - Still waiting for final quote for construction. The final quote is expected by next Friday, September 13th. - The wait came from water filtration issue (credits). Realized the original way was time consuming and potentially ineffective. - Director of Public works is optimistic that the project will only be pushed back couple more weeks. Final will be determined after quote. - Assuming final quote is acceptable work could start as early as October. *Charley O’Hara suggested to have a ground breaking for Big Chimney due to the timing of the project. b. Howard E. Herman Stream Valley Park - Signage was removed to make changes and to correct original issues. - A date needs to be set for Grand Opening once completed. c. Larry Graves Turf - Couple weeks behind in starting this project - Turf will be open as of second week of September. - The county would like to be a part of a combined city county ribbon cutting. - This project is currently under budget. d. Downtown Plaza/naming - Bill Brew was elected to help with the naming. - Mr. Brown’s Park - September 30th at 6 PM will be the grand opening. May include Band/Food & sign. - Nice gathering place  Chess, Sprinklers, Corn hole, more benches, and lighting e. Monthly school project update (Leslie/Justin) – City Council Liaison Letty Hardi gave the update - Live feed available to watch school being built - Construction causing a little traffic - There are still 400 parking spaces available just a little more spread out - Buses have different parking spaces due to construction - Senior parking has been moved to the Junior parking lot and Juniors cannot drive to school f. Fellows Property - The city owns the property - Risk manager asked Danny to take care of putting signs up -No trespassing signs being moved on house. -There was a deconstruction team brought in but they had no interest in the house 8. Adjournment - Kathy Chandler motioned to adjourn the meeting. Bill Brew seconded the motion. Under unanimous vote the meeting adjourned at 8:13 PM.
