PURPOSE OF MEETING: To advise City Council on human services delivery to Falls Church
citizens.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes from September 28, 2017 will be submitted for approval at
November’s meeting.
OLD BUSINESS:
Affordable Housing Policy revision
A guest from the Housing Commission, Tori McKinney, gave an overview of the Affordable
Housing Policy including background information about a workgroup that was created
approximately five years to create the current policy. The process of moving forward of creating a
new group to revise the policy was discussed. Suggestions such as diversity in the workgroup,
identifying others in the community, and gathering information on other jurisdictions’ affordable
housing policy were also mentioned.
Healthy Eating Active Living initiative (HEAL)
Debra discussed the Healthy Eating, Active Living initiative to enhance the community. At the
meeting she attended, the group selected three priorities to propose to Council and to focus on;
they are walkability, community garden, and healthy vending.
Walking tour
Debra mentioned City Council’s tour which started at Fulton and East Broad Street to see
development being planned and went to the Harris Teeter and down to the Lincoln apartments to
see development being finished. They focused on enhancing the environment such as
with fountains in a planned new development park, a fireplace, grocery, retail and eating
establishments, where to put bike shares, gardening, better in-City public transportation, and
safety including fixed walkways and aligned handicapped access ramps.

NEW BUSINESS:

STAFF REPORT
The Friends of Falls Church Homeless Shelter will open on Wednesday, November 15.
The Shelter has 10 beds for male residents and two beds for female residents.
MEETING ADJOURNMENT: The meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
