Held at the Falls Church Community Center, Kenneth R. Burnett Building

Minutes
June 1, 2016
1. Call to Order
Steve Selby called the meeting to order at 8:20 p.m. Members present were Kathy Chandler,
Charley O’Hara, Leslie Rye, and Steve Selby. Staff members present were Danny Schlitt,
Director of Recreation & Parks, and Keke Sidik.
2. Receipt of Public Petitions and Board Member Petitions – No Petitions
3. Minutes
Charley O’Hara motioned to approve the May 4 Meeting Minutes. Kathy Chandler seconded
the motion. A correction was made. The motion was approved with the correction.
4. Recreation Director’s Report
Danny Schlitt presented the Director’s Report:
- Civil War Day was cancelled; outside events will be rescheduled in portions. Kathy
Chandler asked whether there would be an advertisement in the News-Press and
Danny confirmed there would be.
- Memorial Day worked out without the rain.
- Almost up to full staff; Recreation Specialist position has been filled; still seeking
part-time weekend maintenance staff. Summer camp staff filling up; lifeguard staff
most needed.
- As there is no meeting next month, Danny will put a note out that there is a need to
man the donation box on 4th of July.
All discussed Memorial Day.
5. New Business
Danny – Board has been invited to the Work Session by City Council; main Agenda item is
the Master Plan and other items include land purchase.
Charley – If they purchase it, it will not likely be used for parks—likely used for school.
They should consider Lynn Place instead. What’s concerning is their lack of response to us--
we’re deserving of it. It would be beneficial to put together a timeline for Council of what we
expect by what dates, to show that we’re moving forward.
Board discussed the benefits of the timeline, graphics etc. Danny will put together the 3
timelines.
Danny – Met with HOA and informed them of the Work Session for Council; we should
have some citizenry there.
Board discussed the logistics of the Work Session, including dates and what to discuss and
how to present.
Board discussed park signs and maintenance fees.
Danny – will have to hold operating expenses as low as possible but still need to get things
done. Urban forestry group did great job on ground and landscape crew did great job with
planting/landscaping.
Kathy – Rain Garden at Banneker is great.
Charley – Banneker/Berman playground equipment need updating.
Danny – we will need to do big project altogether.
Charley – mother/child swing looks great.
Danny – we will look into adding that to our parks.
Danny – will any of you attend Work Session? I will put together 3 timelines and prepare
flyover to be presented.
Charley – if cut down, just the flyover will work without the whole PowerPoint presentation.
Danny – I have Garrison Kit working on flyover, making changes and improving. We may or
may not present it. Is all else okay to discuss? They are there to talk to you.
Steve – student representatives?
Danny – Representative called out due to sports match.
Board discussed logistics of having representatives; aim to put together parameters for the
program.
Danny - Looking for direction from CBC Group.
6. Old Business
Steve Selby – we’ve covered Big Chimney; any further issues on that?
Danny – met with older group (Winter Hill HOA); they are excited about Big Chimney.
Steve – this positive feedback and engagement is really great.
8. Adjournment
Leslie Rye motioned to adjourn the meeting; Kathy Chandler seconded the motion.
Under unanimous voice vote, Leslie adjourned the meeting.
