Regular Meeting of the Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks Held at the Falls Church Community Center, Kenneth R. Burnett Building 223 Little Falls Street, Falls Church, Virginia 22046 Minutes DRAFT March 7, 2018 1. Call to Order Charley O’Hara called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Members present were Charley O’Hara, Kathy Chandler, Leslie Rye, Kim Hicks, Planning Commission Representative Lindy Hockenberry, City Council Liaison Letty Hardi,. Staff members present were Danny Schlitt, Director Recreation & Parks and Amy Howell, Senior Administrative Assistant Recreation & Parks. 2. Receipt of Public Petitions and Board Member Petitions 3. Minutes for Approval: February 7, 2018 - Leslie Rye motioned to approve the minutes, Kathy Chandler seconded the motion. The motion passed. 4. Recreation Director’s Report - Basketball season is complete. - We are passed the first weeks of Summer Camp registration. - Preparing for AAUW book sale and Tinner Hill Blues Festival. - The parks fared well in the wind storm with a few trees down and some fencing down. No major damage. - Reached out to the City Manager and School’s Superintendent regarding school project. - Narrative handout on synopsis of budget. a) Concerns that any future cuts to the Recreation and Parks budget will come with a cost to the community. b) Concerns about special events funding. c) CIP conversation specifically regarding future maintenance concerns discussed. 5. New Business A. Meet Corey Jannicelli, Recreation Specialist - Corey has a background in history. - Cherry Hill holds programs for schools, Girl Scouts, weddings, special events. - Corey is staff liaison for Arts & Humanities Counsel. B. Tree City USA signage - Dennis Szymanski provided a mockup of signs. - Question raised of having signs in every park. - Consider placing tasteful signs with varying sizes according to size of the park. - Interest in placing welcome signs at gateways to Falls Church. 6. Old Business A. Schools Update - Dr. Noonan forming task group regarding community use of campus site. - VPIS and League of Woman voters interested in giving input. - Falls Church Concert Band has an interest since it stores some equipment at the campus. B. Park Projects - Larry Graves project moving along nicely. Project approached as partnership between Fairfax County and the City of Falls Church. - Some concerns regarding Big Chimney’s discussed regarding the amount of money needed to complete the project the way we would like. 7. Motion to go into a Closed Session pursuant to Virginia Session pursuant to Virginia Code §2.2-3711. (A) 10. Discussion or consideration of honorary degrees or special awards; [Recommendation for 2018 Grand Marshal] - Lindy Hockenberry motioned, Leslie Rye seconded; motion passed. - Charley: I certify that we only talked about what we said we were going to talk about when we went into closed session. All said yes. 8. Adjournment - Lindy Hockenberry motioned to adjourn the meeting. Kathy Chandler seconded the motion. Under unanimous vote, meeting adjourned at 8:34PM.
