Regular Meeting of the Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks Held at the Falls Church Community Center, Kenneth R. Burnett Building 223 Little Falls Street, Falls Church, Virginia 22046 Minutes DRAFT April 4, 2018 1. Call to Order Charley O’Hara called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. Members present were Charley O’Hara, Kathy Chandler, Kim Hicks, Planning Commission Representative Lindy Hockenberry, City Council Liaison Letty Hardi, and School Board Representative Justin Castillo. Student Representatives James Gogal and Sonya Lu were also present. Staff members present were Danny Schlitt, Director Recreation & Parks and Amy Howell, Senior Administrative Assistant Recreation & Parks. 2. Receipt of Public Petitions and Board Member Petitions 3. Minutes for Approval: April 4, 2018 - Kathy Chandler motioned to approve the minutes, Kim Hicks seconded the motion. Justin Castillo abstained. The motion passed. 4. Recreation Director’s Report - A Work Session took place with City Council April 2. City Manager and Council looking for a higher level of information – wanting to tie everything into the City vision. - Soccer starts April 14. - Egg Hunt March 31 with large turnout. - MEH gymnasium taking longer than expected. - Midge Wang accepted Grand Marshal Nomination. - TJ fields have been uncovered and held up well over the winter. 5. New Business 6. Old Business a) Park Project Update - Al Astorga presented plans and requested feedback on color for the Howard E. Herman Stream Valley Park sign. Hope to start construction of the sign in June and complete in November. Option to add an artistic panel/insert under the name of the park. Interest expressed in including “City of Fall Church” on the sign. - Cherry Hill Grand Reopening will be scheduled after park cleanup and barn repair work is complete. b) No smoking project - Information on project sent to Office of Communications. A meeting will be set up with Danny, student representatives, and Communications staff to follow up. c) Monthly school project update - Justin Castillo coordinating Committee meeting on April 23rd to discuss infrastructure, development, and RFP for development. Hoping to begin construction June 2019. d) Broad and Washington project discussion - Charley O’Hare recused himself from discussion on VC’s. - New VC’s on website. - Recreation and Parks should have a designated amount of VC’s. - Concerns remain regarding the second story green space. 7. Adjournment - Kathy Chandler motioned to adjourn the meeting. Kim Hicks seconded the motion. Under unanimous vote, meeting adjourned at 8:36PM.
