Regular Meeting of the Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks Held at the Falls Church Community Center, Kenneth R. Burnett Building 223 Little Falls Street, Falls Church, Virginia 22046 Minutes DRAFT September 5, 2018 1. Call to Order Charley O’Hara called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Members present were Kathy Chandler, Leslie Rye, Kim Hicks, Bill Brew, City Council Liaison Letty Hardi. Staff members present were Danny Schlitt, Director Recreation & Parks and Amy Howell, Senior Administrative Assistant Recreation & Parks. 2. Receipt of Public Petitions and Board Member Petitions - None 3. Minutes for Approval: July 10, 2018 - Kim Hicks motioned to approve the minutes, Leslie Rye seconded the motion. The motion passed. 4. Recreation Director’s Report - Summer camps were well thought out and organized this year and brought in a large volume of children. - We just finished Clean Week and a small portion of the building was painted. - Next weekend will be the Fall Festival. We have 17 restaurants participating. - Fall class registration is underway. - Soccer started this week and Flag Football starts Saturday. 5. New Business a) Election of Chair and Vice-Chair - Charley O’Hara was nominated and elected as Chair, Leslie Rye was nominated and elected as Vice-Chair. 6. Old Business a.) Cherry Hill Playground Equipment Grand Re-Opening - Will take place September 15 at the beginning of the Fall Festival. - Charley O’Hara will be Master of Ceremonies and the Mayor will speak. b.) No Smoking Project - New design on sticker. - Stickers are in all of the Parks and will go in kiosks. - Future project pieces may include updating Susan Finarelli and Sonya Lu may write a letter to the editor. c.) Monthly School Update - The Economic Development project down selected to 3 contractors but 1 chose not to participate. - Danny is working on a document that will go to the Superintendent of Schools and the City Manager containing the concerns of Recreation & Parks. - Some of the main concerns are about design and flow of the building. - Decisions need to be made about camps and fireworks for next year. d.) Big Chimneys - Danny had a meeting with Kim Callahan today to discuss issues. - Pathways, entrance, storm water, play equipment, and the shelter all need to be addressed. - When discussing a shortage of funds, pre and post value engineering should be described along with how much the storm water portion of the project will cost. - A suggestion was made that Danny should speak at a future Council Work Session (possibly September 17) regarding the issues and concerns with the Big Chimneys project. e.) Larry Graves Park - This project will not move forward this year. Fairfax County will not get through the site plan process. New timing has this project scheduled to begin Spring of 2019 with completion in June of 2019. 7. Adjournment - Bill Brew motioned to adjourn the meeting. Leslie Rye seconded the motion.
