City of Galt MINUTES 610 CHABOLLA AVENUE, GALT, CA Thursday, September 19, 2024 10:00 AM SPECIAL MEETING Chairperson: Libby Robbins Vice Chair: VACANT Commissioners: Phyllis Johnson, Dennis McCall, Brendan Moore, Joan Werblun Call Meeting to Order – Roll Call: Libby Robbins, Phyllis Johnson, Dennis McCall, Brendan Moore (tardy), Joan Werblun Advisor: Monica Lopez – Parks & Recreation Public Comment: Under Government Code Section 54954.3, members of the audience may address the Commission on any item of interest to the public or any agenda item before or during the Commission's consideration of the item. Speakers shall restrict their comments to issues that are within the subject matter authority of the Commission and limit comments to a maximum of five (5) minutes. Ken Le spoke about the possibility of a regional bus getting a fixed route in the Galt area and expressed his desire to have a Veterans Memorial Park in Galt. Acceptance of Minutes: Meeting of August 22, 2024 Motion to approve as written DM, JW. All in favor. A. New Business: 1. Chair Robbins Resignation as Commission Chair (Robbins) Letter of resignation as Chair effective 9/19/24. Commissioners will vote for Chair and Vice Chair at the October meeting. B. Old Business: 1. Commission on Aging Annual Report September 17th City Council Meeting (Robbins) Commissioner Moore gave the presentation at the meeting. 2. Sock/Blanket Drive Participation (Robbins) The Commissioners voted to help collect socks and blankets to help the Valhalla Club with their senior packages (JW, LR – all in favor). Commissioner Robbins volunteer to provide the barrels to be used to collect the donations and to find 4-5 locations around town to leave the barrels. The goal is to collect 300 of each by the October Commission Meeting (9/23/24-10/24/24). 3. Bus Trips for Seniors to Casinos Update (Robbins/Johnson) The first trip went well with positive responses. The next trip is 10/10/24. LR will provide a flier to promote the trip to P&R to post on social media. 4. Bingo (All) Have been having about 75 participants each week. A new TV cart has been acquired. The new hotspot is not working consistently. Due to the mouse problem in the Center, the Commissioners voted to spend no more than $100 to purchase tubs to store food items in (LR, DM- all in favor). 5. Senior Resource Fair (Werblun) Commissioner Werblun has been working with Kat at the Chamber in the preparations of this event. Speakers have been scheduled in the P&R classrooms for the duration of the event. Matthew Malone with the Herald has helped with advertising and an interview for the event. Vendors can begin setting up at 8:30am with the event starting at 10:00am. 6. Activities for Seniors (Robbins/Moore) Commissioners Moore and Robbins are working on setting up activities. Commissioner Robbins asked if the other Commissioners were okay with Commissioners Moore and Robbins to start setting up activities. Commissioner Robbins asked about the possibility of setting up monthly spotlights of local seniors to be placed in the Galt Herald. She will be speaking with Matthew Malone regarding this. 7. GSRC Presentations (Robbins) Discussed in #6. 8. LAPAD Update (Johnson) Commissioner Johnson shared that the LAPAD will be having more listening sessions to find out what the needs are in Sacramento County. 9. Grant Writing and Funding (Moore) Commissioner Moore indicated that working closer with the City Council members will help the Commission to know better what things are needed for the community. It was suggested that each Commissioner meet with the Council Member who appointment them to discuss and assess areas to focus on. Commissioners’ Reports: Chair L. Robbins: Commissioner Robbins is the direction that the Commission is moving. She would also like to work on creating a senior forum. Commissioner P. Johnson: Commissioner Johnson would like to find a way for the Commissioners to help with any needs that there may be for the Thanksgiving holiday. This will be placed on the agenda for the October meeting. Commissioner D. McCall: Nothing at the time. Commissioner B. Moore: Commissioner Moore is excited for the activities that are coming for seniors. Commissioner J. Werblun: Commissioner Werblun is spending most of her time getting ready for the upcoming Senior Resource Fair. She would like to see the Commission broaden its scope (and will explain what she means at a later date).
