Meeting Minutes, February 6, 2017
Meeting held in City Council Chambers
A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Juliet Rodriguez, Youth Chair, called the meeting to
order at 6:01 P.M.
B. ROLL CALL:
Adult Mentors Present: Cross, Flores, Gordon, L.Klotz, Lampson
Members Absent: None
Youth Members Present: Cuevas, Gamez, Hassey, O. Klotz, Miller, Muller, Munoz,
Rodriguez, Sessions, Yebra
Members Absent: None
B. PUBLIC COMMENT:
Leesa Klotz from the Galt Rotary thanked those who participated in the speech contest.
D. PRESENTATIONS:
Paige Lampson provided a city council update. She shared that there are now new
marijuana laws which state that people are allowed to have 6 plants indoors and the city
has to create the ordinance still. City Council members gave $100 to the Boy Scouts and
Galt Cheer from their discretionary funds. She also shared that they will be voting for
rezoning of parks.
E. REGULAR BUSINESS:
1. Youth Financial Literacy Workshop
Commissioner Hassey shared that Assemblymember Cooper wants to put on a financial
literacy workshop in Galt with Golden 1 Credit Union. In this workshop, teens would
learn how to manage money and financial security as well as how financial budgeting
works. A motion was made to approve supporting this event.

2. College and Career Fair Update
Adult Mentor Cross shared that set up for the College and Career Fair will be at 7am at
the Hawks Nest Gym. The commissioner’s job is to point students in the right direction,
dress professionally and bring a resume and cover letter to be reviewed.
3. Tiny Smile’s Kids Run
Commissioners Gamez and Sessions shared that they will need volunteers Friday to set
up from 6-7pm and on the day of the event, Saturday, February 11th, from 8:00-10:30am.
4. Winter Bird Festival
Commissioner Miller provided an update on the Winter Bird Festival. The actual
expenditures were $121.42 and income was $165 for a net profit of $43.58, which is low
compared to past years. This may be due to a lack of publicity or the rainy weather. There
was a good amount of volunteers.
5. Art Exhibit Update
Chair Rodriguez shared that the subcommittee received a $500 grant from the Grants
Advisory Board for Youth (GABY). She shared that the videos are done and she talked to
clubs about nominating Unsung Heroes.
6. Crafting with Santa
The Crafting with Santa update will be provided at the next meeting.
7. Editorial Board Update
Editorials on random acts of kindness, the Galt Liberty Unified Ensembles (GLUE), and
Commissioner Rodriguez’s art gallery will be featured in the next Galt Herald.
8. Lessons of Leadership
Adult mentor Klotz presented an article called “Best in a Supporting Role” by Steve
Almond from the Rotarian Magazine. The article highlights the importance of being a
good follower in order to become a good leader and cited New England Patriots
Quarterback Tom Brady as an example of someone who rose from follower to leader.
9. John Moran Scholarship
Adult Mentor Flores explained that there is $1,621 in the scholarship fund. Typically,
$500 is awarded to three students for their community service. Applications are open
from March to April with a decision to be made in May. The scholarship will be awarded
at Senior Awards Night at Galt and Liberty Ranch High Schools.
10. Eggstravanganza Breakfast
The Eggstravaganza Pancake Breakfast will be held on April 8th at the Chabolla Center.
A formal request will be made to the Rotary to see if they can donate sausages and one
will be made to see if the Galt Lion’s will cook pancakes.
11. Approval of minutes for the meeting of January 9, 2017
The minutes will be approved at the next meeting.
12. Treasurer’s Report
Commissioner Gamez provided the Treasurer’s Report. He stated that there is $1,072.06
in the general fund and $3,005.85 in the encumbered funds for a total of $4,077.91.
13. Galt Herald Newspaper
Commissioner Muller presented an article entitled “High school trustees deal with short
tempers, funding shortfalls” from the Galt Herald. Muller highlighted that Trustee
DaPrato took issue with the district’s “Vision and Goals,” specifically that A-G
requirements are more important than graduation rates.

16. Around the Horn/Give your Gratitude
City Council Member Lampson was welcomed to the commission and a thank you letter
from Barbara Payne was presented. Adult Mentor Gordon complimented the
commissioners on their discussion regarding how to disperse funds for the John Moran
Scholarship. The commissioners also learned that everyone at both high schools will be
taking the Economic Development Survey on February 22nd.
AJOURNMENT: Youth Chair J. Rodriguez adjourned the meeting at 7:48P.M.

the number of scholarships and amount per scholarship.

Adult Mentor Flores will provide an update for this fundraiser and assign a commissioner to serve as
subcommittee chair.
11. Approval of minutes for the meeting of January 9, 2017 Action Item
RECOMMENDATION: Approve the minutes.
12. Treasurer’s Report. Information Item
Treasurer Alex Gamez will overview the funds existing in the GYC account as well as treasurer’s report.
