Meeting Minutes, November 4, 2019
Meeting held in City Chambers
380 CIVIC DRIVE GALT, CALIFORNIA
A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Carolina Cuevas Murillo, Chair, called meeting to
order at 6:00 P.M.
B. ROLL CALL:
Adult Mentors Present: Cross, Gordon, Klotz, Lampson
Mentors Absent: Collier
Youth Members Present: Akers, Cuevas Murillo, Hemenover, Kunze, Martin, Mejia,
Neuburger, Rivas, Robles
Members Absent: Stalians
C. PUBLIC COMMENT: Tina Hubert introduces council members Lampson and Sandhu
who thanked the commission for their effort of helping at events and for their
commitment. They gave each mentor and commissioner a gift of appreciation.
D. PRESENTATIONS:
1. Marissa Greenband, representing Breathe California, showed a presentation about the
effects of second-hand smoke and advocated that the youth commission pursue a “no
smoking” rule in attached homes and apartments in Galt.
2. Barbara Payne from the Galt Beautification Committee informed the commission about
their Earth Day event in April and requested participation from the commission.
E. REGULAR BUSINESS:
Chair Cuevas Murillo moved item 12: Lighting of the Night to the top of the agenda.
1. Lighting of the Night
Jackie Garcia presented to the commission about an event she is going to put on at the
City Hall to commemorate Christmas. She wanted the commission to help with the arts
and crafts that with be at the event.

2. Lessons of leadership
Each commissioner presented a prepared elevator speech and explained what the commission
is to them. Their goal was to make it short, sweet, informational, and have examples of what
they did, as well as have personal meaning to their speech.
3. Approval of minutes for the meeting of October 7, 2019
The commission took action to adopt the meeting minutes for the month of October.

4. Treasurer’s Report
Treasurer chair Kunze went over the funds in the GYC account, $5,308.5 was the balance in
the account.
5. City Council Update
Council member Lampson explained to the commission about BREATH California wanting
to have Galt in on a “no smoking” in attached homes. Also, the city council is considering
raising sports programs cost that are run through the city.
6. Galt Herald Newspaper Article
Commissioner Mejia summarized an article about the elementary school district receiving
progress reports where the grades are increasingly getting better.
7. Sacramento County Office of Education Census Project
Commissioners Akers and Neuburger reported on the Youth Engagement Summit they
attended at the Sacramento County Office of Education on November 2nd on behalf of the
commission. They learned the importance of being counted and financial impacts.
Additionally, they brainstormed ideas with McCaffrey Middle School students to help spread
the word about the 2020 Census.
8. Movie Night Fundraiser Reflection
The commission raised $160.08 from the event. Commissioners who went said that the event
was successful and a good learning experience for them. The main improvement they felt
that could have been done was heating the nacho cheese before getting there.
9. Lights on Afterschool Reflection
Commissioners Mejia and Rivas shared their reflections of working at the bubble table.
Commissioner Neuburger supported the Bright Future Learning Centers by making necklaces
and bracelets out of fruit loops.
10. Senior Technology Project
Commissioner Martin shared the seniors appreciated the efforts by the youth commission. At
the last class, they had 12 seniors and two volunteers who assisted the seniors at the event.
11. Art Exhibit Project
Commissioner Akers updated the commission that a community wide art exhibit will not
happen. However, she is considering partnering with another event like Earth Day and
providing opportunities for individuals to participate in a themed painting or drawing class.
12. Adopting a Street Project
The commission discussed about what section of Lincoln Way they would clean up. The
commission took action to adopt cleaning Lincoln Way from Terrace Lane to A Street.

13. Galt Rotary Dinner Community Service
Adult Mentor Klotz overviewed the event on December 14 and explained that it would be a
holiday dinner for many people. They would help set up, cook, decorate, and take down at
the event.

14. Storage Shelf
Mentor Klotz requested a $200 budget to organize the closet. The commission discussed
about it and decided to wait. The commission wanted more specific details and ideas.
15. Holiday Team Building Activity
Commissioner Neuburger offered to hold the event at her home which would consist of team
bonding dinner as well as a white elephant gift exchange in December.

Chair Cuevas Murillo shared how she was impressed with the elevator speeches. Adult
Mentor Gordon thanked members Neuburger and Akers for attending the SCOE summit.
ADJOURNMENT: Chair Cuevas Murillo adjourned the meeting at 8:08pm.
