Meeting Minutes, January 6, 2020
Meeting held in City Council Chambers

A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Carolina Cuevas Murillo, Chair, called meeting to order at
6:00 P.M.
B. ROLL CALL: Adult Mentors Present: Collier, Cross, Gordon, Klotz (arrived at 6:03pm)
Lampson, Singh-Uppal
Youth Members Present: Akers, Cuevas Murillo, Hemenover, Kunze, Martin, Mejia,
Neuburger, Rivas, Stalians
Members Absent: Robles
C. PUBLIC COMMENT: None
D. REGULAR BUSINESS:
1. Exploration with Gallup Strengths
Mentor Collier shared a paper with the commissioners that had the strengths of each mentor
and commissioner. They then tried to find different traits and strengths of mentors and
commissioners.
2. U.S. Census Project
- ARTWORK: Taylor Buck from PRO Youth and Families presented 4 pieces of artwork and
the commissioners shared their thoughts on each of the designs. The conversation concluded
with the idea of merging two of the designs that were presented.
- MERCHANDISE: Mentor Klotz explained that the merchandise subcommittee was unable to
meet but researched ideas and will be sharing them with the subcommittee soon.
- EVENT PLANNING: Mentor Collier explained that the event planning subcommittee was
unable to meet. She shared an informational census bingo learning tool that the commission
may consider using.
- OUTREACH: Mentor Collier had a meeting with the outreach committee, and they decided to
do eight posts on social media about the census. Also, a panel in the Galt Herald to advocate
for the census.
3. Census “Elevator Speeches”
Each commissioner shared their prepared elevator speech. Adult mentor Klotz pointed out
the differences in each speech and what made each one great and unique.
4. Approval of minutes for the meeting of December 2, 2019
The minutes were approved for the previous meeting of December 2, 2019.

5. Treasurer’s Report
Treasurer Kunze overviewed the funds and the total available amount is $5,868.56.
6. City Council Update
Councilmember Lampson introduced Mayor Sandhu and Vice Mayor Lozano, who were in
attendance. Lampson explained there was a cyber-attack on the city of Galt. Also BREATHE
California wants the commission to advocate for a law that would prevent smoking in
apartment buildings and duplexes.
7. Senior Technology Project
Commissioner Martin shared that the classes will be advertised the first or second week of
March. Commissioner Rivas recommended to include the classes in the Galt Herald
notifications section.
8. Adopting a Street Project
Commissioner Cuevas Murillo provided an update that the first cleaning will be on January
18th at 3pm on Lincoln street in front of Galt High School.
7:25pm: Adult Mentor Singh-Uppal leaves.
9. Community Service Event Reflections
Commissioner Rivas facilitated a discussion two community service events the commission
participated in December. With the Lighting of the Night event, Neuburger shared that the
experience was beneficial and fun. Murillo Cuevas and Mejia added that they ran out of
sprinkles, so making sure they had enough of all the materials next time would be a good
idea.
With the Galt Community Dinner, commissioners Rivas, Murillo Cuevas and Neuburger felt
that the set up was calmer than in years past.
10. Eggstravaganza Breakfast Update
Mentor Gordon emailed the Galt Lions Club to find out when the commission could attend
their meeting and request their help at the Eggstravaganza Breakfast event. Commissioners
Hemenover, Kunze, Martin, and Rivas expressed interest in presenting at the Galt Lions
meeting.
11. Winter Bird Festival Budget
Mentor Cross shared a list of food items and supplies needed for this event. She also noted
that the event will be on February 1st and volunteered would need to be there as early at
5:30am. A motion was made not to exceed $200 to purchase food and supplies.

12. Galt Youth Commission Scholarship
Commissioner Kunze gave recommendations on the scholarship amounts for this upcoming
year. After further discussion, a subcommittee was created to further discuss the scholarship
and review the application. Commissioners Kunze, Akers, Mejia and Cuevas Murillo
volunteered to serve on the subcommittee.

14. Around the Horn/ Give Your Gratitude
Mentor Collier invited the commission to a McCaffrey AVID meeting dealing with the
census. Mentor Cross thanked everyone who came out for the Lighting of the Night event.
Commissioner Neuburger was thanked for opening her home for team bonding.
