CITY OF GALT GALT YOUTH COMMISSION Meeting Minutes, January 4, 2021 Meeting via Zoom 380 CIVIC DRIVE GALT, CALIFORNIA A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Chair Rivas, called meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. B. ROLL CALL: Adult Mentors Present: Farmer, Hodge, Hill, Maaga, Klotz, Lampson Mentors Absent: None Youth Members Present: Akers, Gold, Hemenover, Kunze, Mejia, Murillo Cuevas, Neuburger, Rivas, Romero, Sosa Members Absent: None C. PUBLIC COMMENT: None D. PRESENTATIONS: Mark King, Galt Sunrise Rotary Spoke to the commission about what events they put on and how they must do them differently due to COVID-19 restrictions. Also, he spoke on what they do to benefit the community and world. Overall, he spoke on how the rotary benefits the community. E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Icebreaker Adult Mentor Klotz provided the commission with an icebreaker for the meeting. The commissioners each received an envelope with an animal and note. Each commissioner had to relate the animal back to them and create a story for them. 2. Approval of minutes for the meeting of December 7, 2020 The minutes from the previous meeting were approved. Motion: Kunze Second: Murillo Cuevas Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 3. Treasurer’s Report Treasurer Murillo Cuevas reviewed the funds of the commission with a grand total of $1,904.01. 4. Galt Youth Commission Scholarship Timelines Commissioner Murillo Cuevas presented the timelines for this year’s scholarship. The application period will run from February through April 15, 2021. The applications will be reviewed by adults and they will select the winners. A subcommittee of commissioners Murillo Cuevas, Akers and Sosa will review the application and develop the essay question for this year’s scholarship. 5. City Council Update Council Member Farmer shared that he will be the new City Council liaison for the Galt Youth Commission. In his update, he announced that he was selected to serve as the mayor. He shared that the city is still working through budget issues. Also, COVID-19 is still affecting the way things are being done. Council Member Farmer also introduced new adult mentors Mike Hodge and Paige Lampson to the commissioners. 6. Galt Herald Article Commissioner Rivas shared an article about distance learning with the commission. The Galt Herald is teaming with educators to come up with activities for students to do during distance learning. 7. Community Project: Adopting a Street Commissioner Murillo Cuevas provided the commission with an update on the project. She shared that there was not much happening due to COVID-19 restrictions. 8. Community Project: Pen Pals Commissioner Gold updated the commission on the pen pal project. She told the commission that if more materials are needed, she can provide them. There has only been one new response from a pen pal to a commissioner. 9. Community Project: Random Acts of Kindness Commissioner Neuburger updated the commission that the materials have been distributed. There has been one mask sewn by commissioner Gold. 10. Lessons of Leadership Adult Mentor Klotz gave a presentation about the art of servant leadership. The commissioners learned that a servant leader takes on the role of helping everyone around them succeed. She also shared there is a speech contest being put on by the Galt Sunrise Rotary. 11. Future Agenda Items - Youth Mental Health Reflection 12. Around the Horn/Give Your Gratitude Commissioner Rivas thanked the new mentors for joining. Adult Mentor Klotz also thanked the new mentors for joining and is glad to have a full panel of mentors. The adult mentors shared about their animal figures. CORONAVIRUS DISEASE (COVID-19) ADVISORY To protect our constituents, City officials and City staff, the City requests all members of the public to follow the California Department of Health Services’ guidance and the County of Sacramento Public Health Officer Order for the Control of COVID-19 restricting group events and gatherings and maintaining social distancing. Additional information regarding COVID-19 is available on the City’s website at www.ci.galt.ca.us. Consistent with Executive Order N-29-20, the meeting will be held via teleconference/electronically and the City Council will participate via teleconference/electronically. In-person participation by the public will not be permitted and no physical location from which the public may observe the meeting will be available.
