Citizens’ Unity Commission Meeting Minutes April 14, 2016 6:00pm Community Development Conference Room, 5th floor, City Hall Pat Leary, Mary Wallace, Alice Capehart, Carter Phillips, Luretta Ray, Mei Stukes, Anne Andrews, Burley Gardner, Joshua Head, Jodie James, Milton McDonald Staff: Steve Bond & Wanda Ferrell Call to Order - Pat 6:16 Approval of Minutes: December 2015 and March 2016 meetings Motion to approve December and March minutes as they are, Carter 2nd, Pat Call for a vote, all in favor. Introductions Committee Reports Creative Arts - Jodie and Joshua  Going to slow down on the new initiative  Supporting other organizations Youth Outreach - Committee (Sharmane no longer wants to chair so need volunteers to chair this committee) - Tabled 2016 Unity Awards - Mary  June 9, 2016 – Location TBD (had to move due to HVAC renovations at American Theatre) - Ask for a week later, Teen Center and Phoebus High  Who will MC – Senator Mamie Locke agreed to MC this year.  Commissioner duties for the evening – greeters & ushers, please come early to help with set-up if possible.  Got some nominations, waiting on more.  Waiting on Phoebus for location, Performing Arts Center is an option Movie & Mic - Luretta  Barbershop: The Next Cut - Youth opportunity  April 25th, 5:30 seating, 6:00 start time  Ask a youth to facilitate conversation  Luretta working on getting info out to the schools  Invite Youth Commission and ask them to share  Clean City commission planning “Jungle Book” for a group soon for youth   Month of Peace April 2016 - Sharmane  Tabled  Community Partnerships - Deena  Emailed report (page 3 of this document)  Shared report - there was a suggestion to draft a sheet of individual association meetings for a CUC Commissioner to attend. Dates and time of Neighborhood association meetings.  2016 International Children's Festival - Pat  April 16th, 10:00am - 5:00pm, Mill Point Park  Sponsoring Caribbean Islands  Booth attendance sign-up sheet Review Action Items New Business Steve - interviews are scheduled for April 28th. 3 candidates Panel of 5 to include: Pat Leary, Steve Brown, Mary Bunting, Laura Fitzpatrick and Steve Bond Announcements Pat got invite to attend the greeting of the Boat from Hawaii. Mariners Museum, April 28th, 5:30pm, RSVP to Pat by 26th. Carter will attend the reception but cannot attend the lecture. If no one else wants to attend both events, Carter will attend the reception. Mei announced that her Girl Scout Troop #1289 is now a member of the HAMPTON NEIGHBORHOOD COMMISSION as a Non-profit serving organization. Those listed are recognized as community service driven and are given support by the city through facility use and promotion. Adjourn - Pat 7:10 Next meeting June 9th @ Unity Awards Program  Report from Deena Franklin discussing the partnership with Neighborhood Commission This is what the CUC talked about in March for the CUC/NC partnership:  Community Partnerships – Deena  Neighborhood commission meeting 2 Monday @5:00 nd  Share information with Neighborhood Commission  All Commissioners are on the website  Events with neighborhoods to include Diversity  CUC participating with PTA  Have neighborhood walks for Peace Month  Maybe 2 or 3 for the month  Have a lunch and learn or something to get the 2 commissions together and please have food I (Deena) did present this to the Neighborhood Commission in March but I missed the meeting Monday. Whatever the Commission wants to do from the above activities I can communicate to the Neighborhood Commission. I will not be at the meeting this month, I am working out of town. I will not be able to volunteer for the International Children's Festival as originally planned. I was coming home tomorrow but now I cannot due to a conflict in my schedule. I am sorry.
