Civic Communications Committee - Joint Meeting with CAPI Meeting Results February 6, 2017 – Canty Conference Room- 5:00 PM Present: Barbara Hogan Chair - At-Large Commissioner Chekesha White - District 10 Neighborhood Commissioner Stephanie Afonja – Nonprofit Representative CAPI: Fred Everett – District 5 Neighborhood Commissioner Steve Edwards – Faith Based Representative David Duxbury – District Neighborhood Commissioner Absent: Sandra Medina District Neighborhood Commissioner Jason Price – Hampton Police Representative The joint meeting of the Civic Communications and CAPI Committees of Hampton Neighborhood Commission was called to order at 5:00 PM on February 6, 2016 at Canty Conference Room by Barbara Franklin. I. Opening Roll Call – No quorum, will submit minutes via email for approval. Chair Remarks II. Old Business Review of Previous Minutes - The minutes will be distributed electronically for review and approval. 1. You Make A Difference –  Date and Time – March 25, 2017 5pm to 8pm  Location – Queen Street Baptist Church ($900 for venue and catering)  Applications – will make note for additional applications at NC meeting.  Theme - to be determined  Speaker – To be determined; Would like the speaker to have had an impact in the community, not just youth focused, inclusion, empowerment, grass roots level community activism; Alveon Lyons suggested she is a psychologist and relationship expert per website, unrelated to youth theme. Michelle Simpson suggested she is with Inspiring Minds, no consensus made. Suggestions should be submitted to Marybrook by Monday, February 13, 2017.  Walk through – To be scheduled  Supplies – To be determined; Queen Street supplies all table decorations  Recognition Certificates – Needed  Applications – Sandra, Fred and Alice will review after deadline   High School Student Community Activist Recommendations – Barbara will draft letter to be sent to school principals to get to Chekesha by next week III. New Business 1. Blitz Change  Habitat for Humanity initiated a fee for service that is in line with their “hand up not a hand out mission”. The fees are for material costs only.  There is a sliding fee scale; homeowner would not pay any more than $100.  Homeowner can do a payment plan.  Habitat completes the contracts and accepts the payments directly.  H4H used the new fee at the Newport News Blitz, most projects were under $500. There were 15 homes, 9 homeowners paid upfront, 4 payment plans of $5 or $10 per month. 2. Hampton Registered Neighborhood-Serving Organizations – Reviewed Briarwood Terrace Community Association and Riverdale Neighborhood Watch; no issues with the applications. 3. Debrief of Neighborhood Commission Retreat – Stephanie gave an overview of the retreat. NC identified priority areas and will continue to pair goals and initiatives with the priorities. C.
