ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, March 2, 2016; 6:30 p.m. Members Present: Willie Brown, Shawn O’Keefe, Robert Shuford Excused: Terrell Kingwood Absent: Douglas Sessoms, Kelly Wilson Staff Present: Rachael Faunce, Kevin Myers I. Welcome and call to order – Kevin Myers II. Review & Approval of February 2016 meeting minutes - Minutes were unable to be approved as quorum was not met. III. Election of Officers – Elections were moved to the April meeting. IV. Old Business - a. Boo Williams Parking – Mr. Brown discussed the need for additional parking at the Boo Williams Sports Complex. The City’s assistance is needed to clear the adjacent parking lot and fill it with gravel in order to fix the current parking issues. V. New Business a. Athletic field use – the board advised they previously created a rates grid that should be in the files for reference and use. Mr. Myers discussed changes moving forward to better serve the city and citizens to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship. The members suggested engaging private athletic organizations, hiring coaches and eliminating background check costs. O’Keefe offered Stewards of Children training pro bono for coaches, with the department covering the cost of the workbooks ($10.00). Each class is 2 hours and can hold up to 30 people b. Aquatics Center – The Board shared that discussion was initiated 4-5 years ago. National experts have shared their input and financials have been established; file should be in the City Manager’s office. There was concern about potential financial loss if pools are not used regularly; lane rentals would be important. c. Ft. Monroe sailing dock – Mr. Shuford suggested Langley McDonald for another opinion on plans. Suggested that dock should go towards prevailing winds. VI.
