Hampton Senior Citizens Advisory Committee Hampton Senior Center, 3501 Kecoughtan Road May 1, 2023 Call to Order and Welcome Chair Linda Kindred opened the meeting by welcoming all in attendance and reminded all that the attendance sheet at the back of the room was to be signed upon arrival. She added that if anyone needed to be absent from future meetings to contact her directly at 757-776-2286. She noted that if anyone had questions, to ask them at the end of the meeting. Opening prayer was then offered. Roll call & Approval of April Minutes Present: Linda H Kindred-Chair, Lewis Dawley III- Vice Chair, Lynda Burke, Martha L. Clark, Camilla Doctor, Tonya Grant, Cynthia Harris, Phyllis Porter Absent: Cassandra Alston-Townsley, Martha C. Johnson City/Lead Agency Reps: Mayor Donnie Tuck, Councilman Bowman, David McCauley (HPRLS), Susan Elswick (HPRLS), Shantel Hudgins (HPRLS), Shaeron King (HPRLS), Beatrice Sykes (PAA), Ethel Heyward (Social Services), Stephanie Taylor (Peninsula Foster Grandparent Program) Guests: Audrey Johnson, Mike Schetting, Christine Schetting, Doris Farmer, Gloria Gross, Julie Savage, Georgia Scott, Karen Williams, Deborah White Shantel Hudgins conducted the roll call; a quorum was present. The opportunity was given for the advisory board to review the April minutes. A motion to accept the April minutes as written was made, seconded, and unanimously approved. Opening Remarks Director McCauley gave some additional opening remarks and proceeded to discuss informative updates on special current and future events that are to occur in the city in the coming weeks/months. ❖ The Hampton Senior Center held a “Creative Strokes” program on April 19th where seniors had an opportunity to create a broad range canvas art on their own ❖ West Hampton Community Center held a Spring yard sale on April 29th 1  ❖ The Bike Walk Hampton Proclamation Ride is held on May 1st from 5:30pm-7:30pm. The starting location will begin at City Hall ❖ The Words on Wheels Bike/Walk Event is held on May 21st from 2pm-6pm.The starting location will begin at Sly Clyde Ciderworks. ❖ The Blackbeard Pirate Festival will be held on June 2nd-June 4th at Mill Point Park. (Friday-7pm to 10pm, Saturday- 10am to 10pm, Sunday- 12pm to 6pm) ❖ Groovin’ by the Bay will be held on Saturdays from June 11th-August 27th at Mill Point Park from 5pm-8pm. ❖ The Food Truck Rodeo is held on June 25th at Carousel Park from 12pm-4pm. ❖ The Crabtown Seafood Festival is held on September 2nd at Mill Point Park and Downtown Hampton from 11am-7pm. ❖ The Bluebird Gap Fall Festival is held on October 21st-22nd at Bluebird Gap Farm from 10am-5pm. ❖ Downtown Holiday Events and Return of the Holly Days Parade will be held December 8th-10th at Downtown Hampton ❖ The Holiday Wonder Walk is held December 15th-25th at Water Walk Trail near Hampton Coliseum ❖ Annual Delta Dash at Matteson Trail was held on April 29th ❖ Joe & Steve Moore Memorial Scholarship 5K at Sandy Bottom is held on May 6th Board Member Updates No board member updates. Subcommittee Reports Annual Awards: Linda shared the following information: • The subcommittee will be providing a description of the awards event and committee expectations which is to be held on December 4th in the multipurpose room of the Hampton Senior Center. • A nomination form is to be updated and made ready for distribution in August. • A save the date poster was discussed to post at all the community and neighborhood centers in August. • Listing nomination information will be available at each of the special recreation and neighborhood centers • The completed nomination forms are to be submitted only at the Hampton Senior Center. • The nomination period will begin September 1st through November 1st. • The selection committee is to meet November 8th to review and score nominations. 2  • The nomination criteria include any senior citizen aged 70 and older, must reside in Hampton, and must have enhanced the community through their work, volunteerism, or selfless acts of service to the community. • The subcommittee questioned whether board SCAC members can be nominated or be exempt from nominations. • A motion was made and seconded to exempt SCAC board members from nominations. • A motion was carried to accept the report from the Annual Awards Event Subcommittee. Speaker’s Bureau: Cynthia Harris shared the upcoming speakers for the remainder of the year to include: • June 5th→ Mary Fugere, Director, Hampton Convention & Visitor’s Bureau Terri Vander Vennett, Director, Hampton Arts Commission-Hampton Coliseum • July 11th→ Luci Talbot Cochran, Executive Director, Hampton History Museum • August 7th→ Johnathan McBride, Manager, Neighborhood Commission- Hampton 2040 • September 11th→ Dr. Tina Banks-Gray, Nicole Dennis, Susan Elswick, Shaeron King, PRLS Neighborhood, Recreation, and Specialty Centers • October 2nd→ Camica Credle (Credle Insurance Solutions) or Dr. LaTonya Hughes (Assistant Dean, Hampton University School of Nursing) • November 6th→ Hampton Fire Department, Hampton Police Department, Sheriff Department, and Triad, being prepared for the holidays • December 4th→ City Manager Mary Bunting, Mayor Donnie Tuck, 2023 Senior Citizenship Awards Ceremony • A motion was properly moved by Lewis Dawley III and seconded by Camilla Doctor to accept the report from the Speaker’s Bureau subcommittee. Senior Residential Living: Tonya Grant shared the following information: • Finalizing the list of independent living facilities going by visiting the locations, offering information about the meetings, and requesting a facility representative. • Expressed challenges meeting at facilities due to not having the proper identification to indicate as a SCAC board member. • Confirm if approval is needed to add the Chamberlin and the Devonshire facilities to the list. • Expressed challenges that seniors are accustomed to reading paper and if there’s the possibility to have a mailing distribution that goes to the homes of seniors because many of them are not in communities where the information is available. • The motion was moved by Lewis Dawley III and seconded by Linda Burke to approve the report as written. Hospitality: Camilla Doctor shared the following information: • Voting members will be Cassandra Alston-Townsley, Doris Farmer, Stephanie Taylor, and Camilla Doctor. 3  • The responsibilities of the hospitality committee include greeting visitors and passing along information from the Senior Center. • Visitor’s welcome bags are to include items such as mints, tissues, hand sanitizer, and information from various city agencies. • There was also discussion about the signing in process at meetings due to the concern of bottleneck at the front desk. A suggestion was made to create an updated sign in sheet to include information in reference to visitors and board members. • A motion was made to accept the report as written. Mayor’s Town Hall: Lewis Dawley III shared the following information: • The subcommittee is considering the second Monday in October for the Mayor’s next town hall presentation. They will provide a tentative date at the next meeting. • A motion was made to accept the report as written. City/Lead Agency Updates PAA: Beatrice Sykes spoke on the behalf of Bill Massey and shared the following information: • COVID protocols lifted on transportation which led to clients, volunteers, and employees are no longer required to wear masks or do temperature checks. • PAA had a wonderful March for Meals event and Ms. Sykes thanked the volunteers who delivered the meals. • Ms. Sykes shared a reminder that Ivy Memorial Baptist Church has their dining center open on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. Foster Grandparent Program: Stephanie Taylor shared the following information: • The Foster Grandparent Annual Recognition will be held on June 2nd. Therapeutic Recreation: Shaeron King shared the following information: • The therapeutic recreation center will be hosting a Disco Ball Prom on May 20th from 6pm to 8:30pm. Public Comment Linda gave an opportunity for visitors/guests to speak. SCAC visitor, Dena Moore, shared that she is a full-time caregiver to a 75-year-old woman who has COPD, dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other health related illnesses. She reached out to Vice Mayor Gray because she had issues with getting support from various agencies. She shared those seniors/caregivers that are staying home alone do not have a lot of 4 support in comparison to those living within facilities. Dena stated that she is starting a support group for caregivers called “Sandwich Champs”. The “sandwich” reference depicts the generation to those who still are taking care of their responsibilities at home for their children and careers, but then have their elderly parents as well. Linda shared that the Triad meeting will be held on May 2nd at the Hampton Senior Center a 10am. Also, the Senior Expo will be held on May 17th from 10am to 1pm at the Hampton Senior Center. Councilman Bowman shared that the state ombudsman phone number is available on posters within nursing homes and assisted living facilities. They are available to address any questions, comments, and concerns of a loved one. Councilman Bowman also shared that he attended a Special Olympics track and field event at Bethel High School. It was a special and wonderful event that had a lot of families and citizens out there to support. Adjournment Linda closed the meeting by asking all to remember to be a ray of sunshine in someone’s cloud, adding that you may be the only person someone sees, and your smile or act of kindness will brighten someone’s day.
