Town and Gown Committee Meeting Agenda Tuesday, May 8, 2018 Lawson Conference Room, 8th Floor City Hall ANNUAL MEETING ATTENDEES: Ann Bane, Ann Cherry, Mary Fugere, Kellie Goral, Tracy Hanger, Anzell Harrell, Jordan McKinney, James “Pete” Peterson, Pamela Richardson, Chad Smith, Raymond Tripp, Mayor Donnie Tuck, Toni Williams, and Brenda Bailey (recorder) I. Vice Chair Ann Bane called the meeting to order at 12:30pm. II. Roll Call III. Approve April 10, 2017 Meeting Minutes – Raymond advised there is one correction to the April 10 meeting minutes: the Hampton Jazz Festival will take place June 22-24, 2018. Raymond moved to accept the minutes with correction, Ann Cherry seconded and the motion to approve passed. IV. Election and Duties of Officers of the Town & Gown Committee – Kellie nominated Raymond, Chad nominated Mary Fugere for Chair; Raymond accepted the nomination, Mary declined the nomination; a roll call vote was taken that resulted as follows: Ayes: Ann Bane Ann Cherry James “Pete” Peterson Mary Fugere Pamela Richardson Kellie Goral Chad Smith Tracy Hanger Raymond Tripp Anzell Harrell Hon. Donnie Tuck Jordan McKinney Toni Williams Nays: none Chad nominated Mary Fugere as Vice-Chair, Mary accepted the nomination. Appointment of Nominating Committee – Chair Bane requested volunteers to which Mary Fugere, Chad Smith, Anzell Harrell and Toni Williams responded. a. Committee Vacancies – Pete advised of the following openings: One Thomas Nelson Community College student representative, one Downtown Hampton Development Partnership business representative, and eight at-large members (at least two must be local business owners). Three openings will be created by Pete Peterson and Tracy Hanger retirements from City of Hampton employment (as of June 30, 2018) and Synetheia Newby’s resignation. VI. Strategic Direction Subcommittees Goals & Objectives Update Communication/Community Education – Mary Fugere stated the new website provides an opportunity to view events happening at Hampton University, Thomas Nelson Community College, Downtown Hampton Development Partnership, Partnership for a New Phoebus, Coliseum Central Business Improvement District, and Hampton City Schools at-a- glance; the May 1st subcommittee meeting notes were distributed and Mary provided a summary of the meeting. Community Outreach – Bill Thomas was unable to attend this meeting due to the reconvening of Virginia General Assembly. VII. Key updates since the April 10, 2017 Town & Gown Committee Meeting Pete stated City Council will be voting on the city budget at the May 9th meeting. Raymond announced the following events: A Mother’s Day Celebration Concert – 730p on May 11 - Hampton Coliseum WWE Live – 7p on May 27 – Hampton Coliseum Teacher Appreciation Day – 11a-11p on May 8 – Greene Turtle (free menu item up to $12 or $12 off total bill) and J. Jill – 30% off entire purchase May 7-13 Movie Bistro - $4.50 movies on Tuesdays and Thursdays Twisted Crab now open at 2110 Allainby Way; Juice Bar now open at 3150 Allainby Way; Pier 88 will be opening soon in Coliseum Square Center near Firehouse Subs Mayor Tuck mentioned the Air Power Over Hampton Roads air show May 18-20 at Langley Air Force Base. Anzell advised the April 14th First Lady’s Luncheon and April 28th Anniversary Gala were both well-attended; Hampton City Schools’ principals who participated in the Student Leaders program have expressed they were impressed with Hampton University students’ contributions; Senior Week included more than 200 seniors for a trip to King’s Dominion and 300 attendees are expected to participate in a Spirit of Norfolk voyage this evening; Midnight Bowling will take place Wednesday, May 9 from 4p-12a at AFC Chesapeake Lanes; weekend events include a day party on Thursday, May 10, a cookout on Friday, May 11 and a waterfront party on Saturday, May 12 and conclude with commencement on Sunday, May 13 where the speaker will be Ruth Carter, Hampton University Alumna and award-winning costume designer. Jordan stated he is excited to be the 73rd HU Student Government Association President and is eager to see the results of the Communications Subcommittee’s Hampton 101 idea. Pamela announced the sailing team will compete or a national title in the Gill Co-Ed Sailing Nationals on the Lafayette River May 29-June 1; the Hampton University Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Gala honoring Norma B. Harvey, Jacqueline McWilliams, and Ike Readon will take place at Crowne Plaza Hampton Marina on Saturday, June 2 at 530p. Chad stated the 49th Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) graduation commencement is scheduled for 7p Thursday, May 10 at Hampton Coliseum featuring Dr. Belle S. Whelan, President of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges as the speaker; on behalf of the TNCC softball team, he met with the Peninsula Stadium Authority to discuss utilizing War Memorial Stadium for TNCC games; Run for the Stage 5K is scheduled for 9a Saturday, June 2 at the Matteson Trail; TNCC summer camps include: -Summer Science Camp, free and open to middle school students, July 23-26, 2018; Monday – Thursday, 8a-12p at the Hampton Campus -Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Grant Summer Bridge Program, August 6-10, 2018; 9a-4p at the Hampton Campus -Summer Tech Camp; July 30 – August 3, half-day Monday – Friday, at the Historic Campus -The Hover Games, August 20-26, Peninsula Workforce Development Center, more information can be found at https://tncc.edu/summer-camps Tracy advised the citizens fire academy is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 31 from 6- 9p and Saturday, June 2 from 830a-4p; Camp Fury for Girls will take place July 8-13; Camp Prospect for Boys, designed for at-risk boys ages 14-19, will take place July 15-21 Mary announced the following events: -Showstoppers Dance Competition – May 12-13 at Hampton Roads Convention Center (HRCC) -Langley Air Force Base ACC Munitions Manager Conference – May 17-20 (HRCC) -Virginia Square & Round Dance Association Annual Convention – May 17-20 – Crowne Plaza -Virginia USA Gymnastics 2018 Virginia Xcel State Meet – May 18-20 at HRCC; at least 10 volunteers are still needed to set up Thursday, May 18 from 8a-2p, move equipment, etc., the position pays a $500 stipend; Hampton University committee members will try to recruit a student group to fill the need -Hoop Group Southern Jamfest 2018 – May 18-20 (Boo Williams Sportsplex) -Boo Williams Basketball Nike Invitational Boys Tournament – May 25-27 at Boo Williams Sportsplex and local high school gyms -Signature Equipo – May 31-June 2 at HRCC -Southern Bay Race Week – May 31-June 2 beginning at 10a daily at Hampton Roads Harbor -Bodacious Bazaar – June 1-3 at HRCC -Blackbeard Pirate Festival – June 1-3 in Downtown Hampton -Hampton University Ministers’ 104th Annual Conference – June 3-8 at HU Convocation Center -Soon to be released: Hampton University Edition of the Hampton Visitor Guide Toni advised the April 21st Spring Fling was serviced by more than 75 vendors and the beer was sold out by 430p; Scratch Bakery is now open at 36 E. Mellen Street; Partnership for a New Phoebus will debut a new website www.phoebusva.com at the end of May and eliminate the old address www.phoebusva.info ; Mayor Tuck and Dan Aston, founder of The Whitmore  Company, will be the featured speakers during the 6p June 19 annual meeting at the American Legion 221 E. Mellen Street. Ann Cherry stated Joe Kilgore and Jason Samuels were reelected to Hampton City Schools (HCS) School Board, to be joined by the newly-elected Dr. Richard Mason. Kellie stated Hampton High School hosted Governor Northam on April 30 where he signed Senate Bill 775; registration for Race for the Stage 5K, offering a free t-shirt, has been extended to May 11 and 100% of donations will go directly to Hampton City Schools scholarships to local community colleges; Hampton City Schools is participating in Give Local 757 today and has a goal of 800 donations; Hampton Roads Show is taping teacher spotlights today that will air on WAVY and Fox 43 at 11a on May 16. Ann Bane will forward the Give Local 757 link to Brenda for sharing with the committee members; she thanked Peninsula Community Foundation for their organization of the Give Local 757 fundraising work.
