HENDERSON BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION ON EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AND YOUTH OPPORTUNITY REGULAR MEETING AGENDA NOVEMBER 18, 2015 MINUTES I. CALL TO ORDER The meeting of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity was called to order by Vice Chairwoman Senegal at 4:03 p.m. in the City Hall Annex Conference Room, 280 Water Street, Henderson, Nevada. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL The Recording Secretary, Karie Teruya, confirmed the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity had been noticed in compliance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the Agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, the Multigenerational Center, the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, Fire Station No. 86, the Nevada Public Notice Website, the City of Henderson Website, and by mailing a copy of the Agenda to everyone appearing thereon the Agenda Master Mailing List. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no comments presented by the public. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA (Motion) Mr. Johnson introduced a motion to accept the agenda as presented, seconded by Ms. Darmody. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Vice Chairwoman Senegal declared the motion carried. V. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 1 BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION OUTING PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will discuss and approve the date and location for the Blue Ribbon Commission outing. Mr. Williams asked if they would like to go to Zappos or visit another business which relates to Leadership Day. He suggested that the Commission go earlier in the year instead of waiting until end of year as it gets difficult to schedule. Mr. Duke would like to keep Zappos as an option. No action was taken. VI. NEW BUSINESS 2 INTRODUCE NEW MEMBERS TO THE BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION. PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Introduce new staff member, Xanie Gann and new student member, Ray Rodriguez. The Commission introduced themselves and welcomed new staff member, Xanie Gann and new student member, Ray Rodriguez. Mr. Williams informed the Commission that he has been reassigned to other duties and will be transitioning off the Commission and that Ms. Gann will be the new staff representative. Ms. Gann stated she is excited to be working with the Commission. Mr. Williams introduced Ray Rodriguez, of Southeast Career Technical Academy. Mr. Rodriguez thanked the Commission for having him. Blue Ribbon Commission Page 3 of 5 Wednesday, November 18, 2015 - Minutes 3 MINUTES OCTOBER 21, 2015 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Adopt minutes of October 21, 2015. (Motion) Mr. Johnson introduced a motion to adopt the minutes as presented, seconded by Ms. Darmody. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Vice Chairwoman Senegal declared the motion carried. 4 LEADERSHIP DAY 2016 TOPICS PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will discuss and approve topics for Leadership Day 2016. Mr. Williams briefed the Commission about last year’s Leadership Day. A brief discussion ensued. (Motion) Mr. Johnson introduced a motion to accept the three topics: 1. Character Traits: How your traits make you better, different types of leaders, and leadership used in different ways. Include quizzes (Kahoot.it and a personality quiz) 2. Team Building: Self-esteem; being confident to lead, accept and grow. Include trust exercises. 3. Delegations: Working with different personality types and how to motivate. All topics may include icebreakers, movement, videos and candy seconded by Mr. Duke. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Vice Chairwoman Senegal declared the motion carried. Blue Ribbon Commission Page 4 of 5 Wednesday, November 18, 2015 - Minutes 5 LEADERSHIP DAY 2016 WORKSHOPS PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will discuss and approve workshops for Leadership Day 2016. A brief discussion ensued. (Motion) Mr. Johnson introduced a motion to accept the workshop teams below: 1. Character Traits: Chairman Ragan, Ms. Darmody, and Dr. Osantowski. 2. Team Building: Vice Chairwoman Senegal, Mr. Duke, Mr. Moxley, and Ms. Wong. 3. Delegation: Mr. Johnson, Mr. Rodriguez, and Ms. Driscoll. seconded by Ms. Darmody. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Vice Chairwoman Senegal declared the motion carried. 6 LEADERSHIP DAY 2016 GUEST SPEAKERS AND FEES PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will discuss and approve guest speakers and fees if any, for Leadership Day 2016. Ms. Darmody would like to invite retired Senator Valerie Weiner, founder of Nevada Youth Legislature and/or Senator Joyce Woodhouse to attend and speak at Leadership Day. (Motion) Mr. Johnson introduced a motion for Ms. Darmody to invite retired Senator Weiner and/or Senator Woodhouse to attend and speak at Leadership Day seconded by Mr. Duke. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Vice Chairwoman Senegal declared the motion carried. 7 LEADERSHIP DAY 2016 T-SHIRT COLOR AND DESIGN PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will discuss and approve the t-shirt color and design for Leadership Day 2016. Ms. Darmody commented that she liked last year’s shirt and still wears it. Mr. Williams handed out possible t-shirt designs. A discussion ensued regarding t-shirt design, colors and font. Mr. Duke, Mr. Johnson and Ms. Darmody suggested ideas for the t-shirt. Mr. Duke will draft a design and bring it to the next meeting. No action was taken. Blue Ribbon Commission Page 5 of 5 Wednesday, November 18, 2015 - Minutes 8 LEADERSHIP DAY 2016 SURVEYS PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members will discuss and approve Leadership Day surveys. Mr. Duke would like to add, “What was your favorite workshop?” and a list of possible methods of how they heard about the event and also include a list of schools in which they could choose from. Mr. Williams asked the commission members to review the survey and bring any suggestions to the next meeting. No action was taken. VII. CHAIRMAN\MEMBER COMMENTS Dr. Osantowski commended commission members who attended College Night at Green Valley High School as they were professional and she was proud of them. VIII. SET NEXT MEETING The next meeting was set for December 16, 2015, at 4:00 p.m. in the City Hall Annex Conference Room. IX. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no comments presented by the public. X.
