MINUTES
I. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and
Youth Opportunity was called to order by Chairman Ragan at 4:09 p.m. in the
City Hall Annex Conference Room, 280 Water Street, Henderson, Nevada.
II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL
The Recording Secretary, Karie Teruya, confirmed the Blue Ribbon
Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity had been
noticed in compliance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the Agenda three
working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, the Multigenerational Center, the
Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, Fire Station No. 86, the Nevada Public
Notice Website, the City of Henderson Website, and by mailing a copy of the
Agenda to everyone appearing thereon the Agenda Master Mailing List.

IV. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA
(Motion) Mr. Johnson introduced a motion to accept the agenda as
presented, seconded by Mr. Moxley. The vote favoring approval
was unanimous. Chairman Ragan declared the motion
carried.
V. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
1 BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION OUTING
PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION
Commission members will discuss and approve the date and location for the
Blue Ribbon Commission outing.
Recording Secretary Teruya reiterated from the previous meeting that Zappos
was suggested and the Commission would bring other suggestions to this
meeting. A brief discussion ensued.
(Motion) Mr. Johnson introduced a motion to visit Zappos as the
commission outing, seconded by Ms. Senegal. The vote favoring
approval was unanimous. Chairman Ragan declared the motion
carried.
2 LEADERSHIP DAY 2016 T-SHIRT COLOR AND DESIGN
PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION
Commission members will discuss and approve the t-shirt color and design for
Leadership Day 2016.
A discussion ensued regarding six t-shirt ideas which were posted on the board.
The Commission would like the t-shirt color to be dark gray with blue font and
include the Blue Ribbon Commission logo on one sleeve and “Established
1993” on the other sleeve with nothing on the back. Suggestions will be sent to
Graphics who will take their ideas and brought to the next meeting.
No action was taken, this will continue to next month’s agenda.
3 LEADERSHIP DAY 2016 SURVEYS

Commission members will discuss and approve Leadership Day surveys.

A discussion ensued regarding surveys. Commission members would like to
add individual workshop ratings and remove questions on safety and customer
service. They would also like to add additional questions, “How likely would you
join the Blue Ribbon Commission and if so, include your email address.” “Are
there any possible changes you would like to suggest?” “Did you like the
workshops?” and include a space for “Comments?”
No action was taken.
VI. NEW BUSINESS
4 INTRODUCE NEW MEMBERS TO THE BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION
PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION
Introduce new adult members, Paula Parker and David Cortez Lopez.
Chairman Ragan introduced new adult members to the Commission. The
Commission introduced themselves and stated their favorite movie.

Adopt minutes of November 18, 2015.
(Motion) Mr. Johnson introduced a motion to adopt the minutes as
presented, seconded by Ms. Darmody. The vote favoring approval
was unanimous. Chairman Ragan declared the motion
carried.
6 LEADERSHIP DAY 2016 WORKSHOPS
PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION
Plan and discuss details for Leadership Day workshops.
A brief discussion ensued regarding last year’s Leadership Day schedule, how
workshop were grouped, and themes for workshops. The Commission
separated into groups to discuss their workshops. The Commission members
reconvened at 4:55 p.m. and provided a brief summary of what they planned for
their workshops which included an icebreaker and activity.

7 LEADERSHIP DAY DETAILS
PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION
Discuss and approve details for Leadership Day.
This was discussed after item 8. Ms. Wong asked if we would have the food
drive as in the past and provided a brief history. Ms. Wong suggested to make it
a school wide food drive and have the City pick up the food from the school a
day prior to Leadership Day.
No action was taken, this will continue to next month’s agenda.
8 LEADERSHIP DAY 2016 SPONSORSHIPS
PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION
Discuss and approve Leadership Day sponsorships.
Ms. Teruya briefed the Commission on what was done for last year’s
Leadership Day sponsors to get items for the goody bags. A brief discussion
ensued. Commission members reported a lot of rejection in asking for items in
the past. Mr. Moxley stated it doesn’t matter what is or isn’t in the bag, students
are thankful for whatever is given. The Commission would like to have candy in
the bag. Recreation Superintendent, Jayne Mazurkiewicz recommended to
have the budget for this event on the next agenda to review. The Commission
will check with various businesses and report back at the next meeting.
VII. CHAIRMAN\MEMBER COMMENTS
There were no comments presented.
VIII. SET NEXT MEETING
The next meeting was set for January 20, 2016, at 4:00 p.m. in the City Hall
Annex Conference Room.

There being no further business to come before the Commission,
