CITY OF HENDERSON BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION ON EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE AND YOUTH OPPORTUNITY REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Wednesday, November 15, 2017 I. CALL TO ORDER The meeting of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity was called to order by Chair Brooklyn Darmody at 4:04 p.m., in the City Hall Annex Conference Room, 280 Water Street, Henderson, Nevada II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL Tina Sigman, Recording Secretary, confirmed the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and Youth Opportunity had been noticed in compliance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the Agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, the Multigenerational Center, the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, Fire Station No. 86, the Nevada Public Notice Website, and the City of Henderson Website, and by electronically mailing a copy of the Agenda to everyone appearing thereon the Agenda Master Electronic Mailing List. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments presented. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA (Motion) Miss Couey introduced a motion to accept the agenda as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chair Darmody declared the motion carried. V. UNFINISHED BUSINESS UB-1 REVIEW TRUNK OR TREAT AT BLACK MOUNTAIN RECREATION CENTER ON OCTOBER 26, 2017 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Review and discuss the Trunk or Treat event that occurred on October 26, 2017. Staff presented a slide show of the Trunk or Treat event held at the Black Mountain Recreation Center on October 26, 2017. Staff thanked Michael Mutzhaus and his friends for the super hero costumes. Feedback from Commission members included: good participation by kids, great display, enough candy to last the whole event, and comic books and stickers were popular giveaways. UB-2 LEADERSHIP DAY 2018 - T-SHIRT COLOR, GRAPHIC, AND DESIGN PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and recommend T-shirt color, style, and potential graphic design for Leadership Day 2018. Staff displayed six T-shirt designs provided by Miss Callis. The theme is “Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader.” (Motion) Ms. Couey introduced a motion to order T-shirts from same vendor as last year in the color lime green. The vote favoring approval was: Those voting Aye: Darmody, Callis, Couey, Driscoll, Elliott, Jackson, Klinger, Martinez, and Marcial-Lorza Those voting Nay: Luke Adamo, Michael Mutzhaus, and Shane Zeller. Those Absent: Chair Darmody declared the motion carried. Blue Ribbon Commission Page 3 of 5 Wednesday, November 15, 2017 - Minutes The T-shirt with the globe from design number 4, and the book from design number 2 will be provided to the City’s marketing division to draft samples. The samples will be discussed at a future meeting for a final decision. (Motion) Ms. Couey introduced a motion to keep the Be Kind and Blue Ribbon Commission logos on the sleeves (shoulders) the T-shirt. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chair Darmody declared the motion carried. Staff will get price quotes of the BRC logo on the sleeve versus on the back of the shirt; and the cost of adding all the schools on the back of the shirt. This item will be further discussed at the next meeting. UB-3 LEADERSHIP DAY 2018 - KEYNOTE SPEAKER PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Discuss and recommend potential Keynote Speaker for Leadership Day 2018. Miss Jackson reported that she is waiting to hear back regarding whether Andre Agassi can commit to be the keynote speaker for Leadership Day 2018. It was noted that the back-up speaker is Clark County Commissioner Laurence Weekly. Councilwoman Gerri Schroder will speak at the end of the event. If Mr. Agassi is available, Miss Jackson should ask if he charges a fee to speak, and how long he would like to speak. A brief discussion ensued regarding possibly having both Mr. Agassi and Mr. Weekly speak if time allows. This item will be further discussed at the next meeting. UB-4 LEADERSHIP DAY 2018 - GIVEAWAY BAGS PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Updates from Commissioners about which organizations were contacted for items to place in the giveaway bags for Leadership Day. The following updates regarding giveaway items were provided:  Need 300 of each giveaway item  Donations will be provided by Touro University, UNR, and the Golden Knights hockey team  Possibly coupons for mini bundt cakes  Possibly something from Walmart Blue Ribbon Commission Page 4 of 5 Wednesday, November 15, 2017 - Minutes The following businesses will be contacted for further donations for raffle prizes and giveaway bags: UNLV dental school, Rosemund University, Turano Baking Company, Raising Canes, Chick Fillet, In-N-Out, Hobby Lobby, Trader Joes (water), Raiders football team, Las Vegas Lights professional soccer team, Las Vegas 51’s baseball team, Sky Zone, and Truman Orthodontics. It was noted that staff will provide a PR letter that can be presented to businesses when soliciting donations. A brief discussion ensued regarding changing material for the giveaway bags to be more durable; however, it was noted this will increase the cost of the bags. Staff will get a pricing quote to include the T-shirt design and phrase “Today a Reader/tomorrow a Leader” on the bags, and Blue Ribbon Commission. This item will be discussed further at next meeting. UB-5 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - BLUE STAR MOTHERS STOCKING STUFFING EVENT AT HENDERSON CONVENTION CENTER ON NOVEMBER 29, 2017 AT 4:00 P.M. PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Update on donations and method of collection for the Blue Star Mothers Stocking Stuffing Event. Ms. Driscoll reported that she is collecting donations for this event, and reviewed needed items. Ms. Sigman will make copies of the backup material for students to take to schools. The following commissioners volunteered to attend this stocking stuffing event on November 29, 2017, at 4:00 p.m.: Shane Zeller, Avrey Callis, Brooklyn Darmody, Zayli Jackson, Paula Driscoll, Genaro Marcial-Lorza, and Luke Adamo. Commissioners were asked to wear their Blue Ribbon Commission polo shirts and jeans. VI. NEW BUSINESS NB-6 MINUTES BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING OCTOBER 18, 2017 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Blue Ribbon Commission Regular Meeting Minutes of October 18, 2017. (Motion) Mr. Mutzhaus introduced a motion to adopt the minutes of October 18, 2017, as submitted. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. CHAIRMAN\MEMBER COMMENTS An item will be placed on the next agenda to discuss workshops and the itinerary for Leadership Day. Chair Darmody asked Commission members to respond to emails from staff. VIII. SET NEXT MEETING The next meeting was set for December 13, 2017, at 4:00 p.m. IX. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments presented. X.
