CITY OF HENDERSON SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES December 20, 2017 I. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Liz Baldizan called the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting to order at 5:31 p.m., at 240 Water Street, Henderson City Hall, in the Council Chambers Conference Room. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL Joanne Wershba, Administrative Assistant III, confirmed the meeting had been posted in accordance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, Multigenerational Center, Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, and Fire Station No. 86. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no comments presented by the public. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF THE AGENDA Item 5 was continued. (Motion) Ms. Smith introduced a motion to accept the agenda as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Baldizan declared the motion carried. Chairman Baldizan introduced Bethany Sanchez as the new City Attorney assigned to the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission. V. UNFINISHED BUSINESS UB-1 COMMUNITY RESPONSE FORM PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commissioners will discuss and possibly approve community response form for concerns, challenges and/or suggestions in the senior community to gain information from community events. Note: This item was heard immediately following NB-4. Corey Clark, Recreation Services Manager, briefly updated the Commission regarding the community response forms for concerns and challenges in the senior community. A discussion took place regarding how members of the Commission can utilize the form to get citizen feedback regarding issues affecting the citizens of Henderson. It was suggested that the form be available in an app or online. VI. NEW BUSINESS NB-2 MINUTES SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING OCTOBER 18, 2017 PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting minutes of October 18, 2017. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 3 December 20, 2017 – Minutes Note: This item was heard immediately following the Acceptance of the Agenda. (Motion) Ms. McEvers introduced a motion to accept the adopt the October 18, 2017, minutes, as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Baldizan declared the motion carried. NB-3 INTRODUCTION HENDERSON POLICE CHIEF LATESHA WATSON City of Henderson Police Chief, LaTesha Watson, will introduce herself. Commissioners will have the opportunity to ask questions to learn more about Henderson's new police chief. Police Chief LaTesha Watson introduced herself and made a few brief remarks. Chief Watson said she would be happy to return in six months to address the Commission again. NB-4 PRESENTATION COUNCILWOMAN GERRI SCHRODER PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Councilwoman Gerri Schroder will be speaking on concerns impacting seniors on the local and national level. Councilwoman Gerri Schroder made some remarks regarding issues concerning seniors, and thanked the Commissioners for their dedicated service. She requested that the members of the Commission consider the next generation of seniors and what their wants and needs may be. A discussion ensued regarding senior issues nationally. It was noted that some of the main concerns currently facing seniors are the opioid crisis, scams, and veterans’ housing. A discussion ensued regarding transportation concerns for seniors. NB-5 PRESENTATION CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF SOUTHERN NEVADA RETIRED SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM (RSVP) AND SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM A staff member of Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada will provide information about their Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Senior Companion Program for discussion only. This item was continued. NB-6 PRESENTATION HENDERSON SENIORS' AUXILIARY Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 4 December 20, 2017 – Minutes PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION A member of the Henderson Seniors' Auxiliary will give their monthly report on activities of the organization. Linda Rauenbuehler, Henderson Seniors’ Auxiliary, gave an update on the Auxiliary’s activities for the month, and a wrap up for the year. She noted that the mini-mart may have to close briefly, but does not anticipate it being closed longer than a day. Chairman Baldizan requested a copy of the newsletter be made available at next month’s meeting. NB-7 COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION OF SENIOR SERVICES PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commissioners will discuss communication and information of senior services and referral organizations. Discussion ensued regarding seniors having access to resources and information regarding services available to them. It was noted that often seniors do not know where to look, or how to access necessary services. It was suggested that Henderson Happenings be utilized as a resource for seniors to obtain information. Councilwoman Schroder suggested changing the cover of the Henderson Happenings to include seniors. NB-8 ATTEND AND OR PARTICIPATE IN UPCOMING EVENTS PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Commissioners will discuss and possibly approve whether the commissioners will attend and or participate in upcoming community programs or events. Chairman Baldizan informed the Commission of the following events: Healthy Henderson Fair, January 13, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. Multigen Center Senior Summit January 30, 2018, 8:30 p.m. Heritage Park Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 5 December 20, 2017 – Minutes Councilwoman Schroder informed the Commission of the following event: State of the City by Mayor March January 10, 2018 Green Valley Ranch Corey Clark, Recreation Services Manager, informed the Commission of the following event: March On January 17, 2018, 10:00 a.m. Heritage Park NB-9 STAFF REPORT PUBLIC WORKS, PARKS AND RECREATION Recreation Services Manager, Corey Clark, will give an update on the Meals on Wheels program and on the City's senior services. Corey Clark, Recreation Services Manager, presented the staff report and gave an update on the Meals on Wheels program as well as other senior services. Discussion ensued regarding the Meals on Wheels program including funding sources and the number of seniors on the waiting list. VI. CHAIRMAN/MEMBER COMMENTS Chairman Baldizan announced that Francine Fields has resigned from the Commission, and circulated a card for Ms. Fields. Ms. Jolliff informed the Commission members about a tablet specially designed for seniors called Grandpad. Ms. Joliff stated that these tablets are inexpensive and come loaded with contact information and exclusive senior apps. Ms. Joliff said she will bring one to the next meeting for a demonstration. Mr. Shepherd commented about his attendance to the Veterans Event. He said it was a great event. Mr. Shepherd also noted that one of the main issues for senior veterans is transportation. It was suggested that transportation for veterans be on a future agenda. Ms. McEvers commented that there will be a change in the senior transportation schedule for Heritage Park. This will be discussed at a future agenda. VII. SET NEXT MEETING Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 6 December 20, 2017 – Minutes The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on January 17, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers Conference Room of City Hall. VIII. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments presented. IX.
