CITY OF HENDERSON SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES Wednesday, November 13, 2024 I. CALL TO ORDER Chair Joanna Gerali called the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission meeting to order at 3:00 p.m., at the Heritage Park Senior Facility, 300 South Racetrack Road, Henderson, Nevada 89015. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL Anthony Rossa, Administrative Assistant III, confirmed the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission meeting had been noticed in compliance with the Nevada Open Meeting Law. ACCEPTANCE OF AGENDA (For Possible Action) (Motion) Commissioner Favil West introduced a motion to accept the agenda, as presented. (Vote) The vote favoring passage was unanimous. Chair Joanna Gerali declared the motion carried. V. NEW BUSINESS 1 MINUTES SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING OCTOBER 9, 2024 PARKS AND RECREATION Member Judy Belanger stated her last name was spelled incorrectly in the October 9, 2024, meeting minutes and requested the spelling be corrected. (Motion) Commissioner Audrey Woods introduced a motion to approve the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting minutes of October 9, 2024, with the amendments requested by Member Judy Belanger. (Vote) The vote favoring passage was unanimous. Chair Joanna Gerali declared the motion carried. 2 SENIOR NUTRITION PRESENTATION PARKS AND RECREATION Danielle Norris, Parks and Recreation Manager, provided a brief history of Henderson senior centers and services, and introduced Michelle McGory, Recreation Services Supervisor; Erin Straight, Recreation Services Supervisor; Melanie Larsen, Senior Services Nutritional Supervisor; and Codi Robinson, Recreation Services Coordinator. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting Page 3 of 5 Wednesday, November 13, 2024 – Minutes Ms. McGory, Ms. Straight, Ms. Larsen, and Ms. Robinson referenced a PowerPoint presentation and spoke regarding the following topics:  Free ongoing activities, crafts, activities, and health related programming.  Excursions and transportation services.  Senior Resource and Nutrition Programs: o Dining, Homebound, and Congregate Meal Programs. o Meal pattern requirements by the Aging and Disability Services Division.  Benefits of senior nutrition.  Heritage Park Senior Facility kitchen renovation.  Meadows Café.  Fresh fruits and vegetable program provided by the Henderson Seniors Auxiliary.  Meals on Wheels and Meals on Wheels Pet Food Programs.  Annual Angel Tree Program.  UNLV Nursing Program Partnership. Ms. Norris distributed a flyer to the Commissioners for an upcoming free event. A discussion ensued regarding turnout for activities, events, and excursions, where participants travel from to attend these offerings, methods for tracking participants’ demographics, and the process for registering for the dining program. 3 SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING FREQUENCY DISCUSSION PARKS AND RECREATION Chair Joanna Gerali facilitated a discussion on the meeting frequency of the Commission. Bethany Sanchez, Assistant City Attorney, confirmed the Commission would need to amend the bylaws to adjust the meeting frequency. 4 AUTHORIZE PARTICIPATION BY SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MEMBERS AT UPCOMING EVENTS FROM NOVEMBER 14, 2024, TO DECEMBER 10, 2024. PARKS AND RECREATION (Motion) Commissioner Audrey Woods moved to approve the participation and attendance in upcoming community programs or events as a representative of the Commission for November 14, 2024, to December 10, 2024. Chair Joanna Gerali declared the motion carried. 5 SENIOR AUXILIARY PRESENTATION PARKS AND RECREATION Jolaine Farage, Henderson Senior Auxiliary, reported on the recent activities of the organization, including:  Participation in the Harvest Festival.  Halloween Costume Parade.  Upcoming Naughty and Nice Gala, bake sale, gift raffle, and Christmas tree silent auction. 6 STAFF REPORT PARKS AND RECREATION Danielle Norris, Parks and Recreation Manager, stated the Commission will tour the renovated kitchen after today’s meeting is adjourned. Ms. Norris reminded the Commission not to discuss Commission business during the tour. Ms. Norris also provided updates on recent and upcoming events, including:  Trunk or Treat at Black Mountain.  Be Kind Event.  World Kindness Day.  Wellness Wednesday.  Winterfest on December 6th, 2024.  Upcoming watch parties on Water Street. VI. CHAIRMAN\MEMBER COMMENTS Chair Joanna Gerali stated she represented the Commission at the Harvest Festival and suggested the date of the festival be changed next year. Member Judy Belanger stated she and Member Anita Gant attended a presentation by Liz Baldizan, who referenced a Cleveland Clinic study suggesting isolation and loneliness as a main cause of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Member Ed Long requested a representative from the Nevada Silver Haired Legislative Forum be invited to speak before the Commission on any bill draft resolutions they are preparing to bring before the Nevada Legislature. Member Audrey Woods recommended the meatloaf at the Heritage Park Senior Facility. VII. SET NEXT MEETING The next meeting was set for Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. VIII. PUBLIC COMMENT Jonathan Rodriguez, Planner II, spoke regarding the Army Street Farmers’ Market and distributed a flyer to the Commission. IX.
