MINUTES HOT SPRINGS ARTS ADVISORY COMMITTEE December 13, 2022 12:00 PM 111 Opera Street, Suite A 1. Roll Call of Committee Members Committee Members present: Dale Blackwelder, Nan Cameron, June Simmons, Alix Stafford, Kara Gunter, Eli Vega, and Karen Wiley. Staff: Anthony Whittington, Kathleen Fason, Hannah Rice, and Chris Baber. 2. Approval of the Agenda Nan made a motion to approve the December 13, 2022 agenda. June seconded. Motion passed. 3. Approval of the Minutes June made a motion to approve the November 7, 2022 minutes. Alix seconded. Motion passed. 4. Introduction of Guests 5. BUSINESS: A. Car Sculpture: Chris Baber asked questions of the committee regarding the type of plinth that they need and/or want for the Car Sculpture. It was decided to have a metal sheet in the shape of a race track and have it rolling and turning. Kathleen shared that she had contacted the Whittington Apartments to inquire about a donation of an additional Car sculpture that they have laying in the grass on their property. She is waiting for a return call after the manager contacts upper management. Karen suggested the name be “Gametime” after the company that created the car spin riders. Kathleen will contact the company for permission. B. Presentation of JWW Wetlands Trailhead Feature Design: Anthony showed a photo of the cairn fountain in front of National Park College. He said that he and Brian Fisher had visited Bennett Brothers to discuss them designing a similar sized cairn fountain for our JWWWT but with the uneven stone formation like our cairn fountain next to the Farmer’s Market. They are putting together a quote for us now. C. Sculpture Installation Updates: Street Department is still short employees. They have it on their schedule to create plinths for the Lion and Ballerina and will get to it as soon as possible. Parks staff will be working on the installation of the Tranquility Garden entryway once they finish removing all the holiday decorations in January. Dale mentioned that he had assessed both locations recently from Golf Links Road and feels that they will be visible to the public from the street for at least 4-5 months of the year. D. Public Art Plan for Hot Springs: Anthony shared that he has not yet heard back from City Management regarding a decision on funding of the plan. E. Grants, Fundraising Suggestions: Eli shared an idea that he and other local artists could hold workshops and donate the proceeds to the City to raise funds to needed expenses. In the past we have used donations as additional funding to purchase sculpture and art, purchase advertisement leaflets, etc. A show of hands revealed support for this fundraising effort. Eli will contact other artist for willingness to conduct a workshop and/or provide space for a workshop. He will report back in January. Karen Wiley recommended that the committee reach out to the Hot Springs Cultural Alliance to discuss a partnership that would facilitate funding for public art projects. Grantors like to see broad support through partnerships in a community. This partnership will strengthen our standing in the community and accelerate the program. 6. Arts Advisory Committee comments: 7. Parks & Trails Director comments: Anthony spoke about the progress made on the Stokes Creek Greenway and funding received for the first phase. Karen mentioned she is new to town and doesn’t know where that area is located. Kathleen offered to put together a PowerPoint for the January that will show the City trails system. 8.
