~ LAFAYETTE ~ MINUTES OF THE LAFAYETTE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION January 30, 2023 7:00 pm Council Chambers, City Hall Attendance Commission Members: Ann Amato, John Burns, Julie Ginn, Kevin Klinker, Sean Lutes, Shawna McCully, Amy Paget, Alec Williams Absent: Stephanie Rogers Staff in Attendance: John Collier, Economic Development; Michelle Conwell, Economic Development; Dann Keiser, Historic Preservation Officer Others in Attendance: Call to Order Noting a quorum, President Sean Lutes called the meeting of the Lafayette Historic Preservation Commission to order at 7:00 pm. Election of Officers Julie Ginn made a motion to nominate and approve the following slate of officers for 2023: President: Sean Lutes Vice President: John Burns Secretary: Amy Paget Amy Paget seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Approval of the Minutes John Burns moved to recommend approval ofthe December 19, 2022 meeting minutes. Shawna seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. New Business Public Relations and Education Committee: Update on the Then and Now Project The Committee is recommending a draft of a "Then and Now" information sign to be installed as a prototype project on west side of 5th St. between Main and Columbia Street. The sign will include a historic photo taken from a similar location as the proposed sign to show how things looked then compared to today. The historic image shows the present-day Roth Florist building and the Lahr House from 1910 with a description of what was occurring in the city at that time. A QR code will be considered on the sign as well to direct the public to additional historic information.  District Committee: Local Ellsworth/17 S. 7th St. Historic District - petitioner: C. H. Buckley Shawna McCully presented a petition to create a new individual property local Ellsworth/17 S. 7th St. Historic District was submitted by petitioner C.H. Buckley. Sean Lutes presented on behalf ofthe petitioner C.H. Buckley (Seeds of Hope Ministries). The structure served as the original home of Temple Israel and is the oldest Jewish Synagogue in Indiana and the 13 th oldest in the nation. Dann Keiser reported that the Italianate structure was built in 1867 and rated as Outstanding and was placed on the National Historic Register in 1982. A letter from the Indiana Jewish Historical Society was written in support and read aloud by Sean Lutes. John Burns made a motion to approve the petition, Julie Ginn seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Local S. 9th Street Hill/1114 State St. Historic District - petitioner: David Bathe Shawna McCully presented a petition to create a new individual property Local S. 9th Street Hill/1114 State St. Historic District submitted by petitioner David Bathe, Chief Executive Officer of United Way of Greater Lafayette as United Way is the property owner. This home once belonged to longtime Lafayette resident and architect Walter Scholer who designed many buildings throughout the community and area including numerous buildings on Purdue's campus. Dann Keiser reported that the home was built in 1875 and is rated as Notable. The home currently has wood windows and many architectural details that make it worthy of local designation. Kevin Klinker made a motion to approve the petition, Shawna McCully seconded. The motion passed unanimously. COA Committee-no report Staff Report New Historic Preservation Commission members, Ann Amato and Alec Williams, introduced themselves. John Collier shared the 2022 Annual Report for work that the Historic Preservation Commission completed over the past year. He also thanked the Commission for their hard work and dedication to the Commission's mission. 2023 Committee Assignments: Committee assignments were discussed as follows: COA Committee -Julie Ginn, Sean Lutes, John Burns - Sean Lutes, chair Public Relations & Education Committee-Amy Paget, Kevin Klinker, Ann Amato - Amy Paget, chair District Committee-Shawna McCully, Alec Williams, Stephanie Rogers - Shawna McCully, chair Shawna McCully made a motion to accept the Committee Assignment as listed above. Ann Amato seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. Public Comment No public comments were received. Adjournment There being no further business to bring before the Commission, Kevin Klinker moved to adjourn the meeting. Shawna McCu lIy seconded the motion.
