REGULAR MEETING OF THE
LAFAYETTE PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD
4:00 pm
21 September 2020
The City of Lafayette Parks and Recreation Board met in regular meeting at 4:00pm, September
21, 2020. The meeting was held via virtual “gotomeeting” which was livestreamed through City
of Lafayette’s Youtube channel.
The meeting was called to order by Park Board President, Maurie Denney. Board members
present were Pat Corey, Dave Mecklenburg and Matt Metzger. Parks Superintendent Claudine
Laufman, Parks Director of Operations Jon Miner, Zoo Director Neil Dale, Marketing Manager
Samantha Haville, and Recording Secretary Jenny Spencer were present. Also present was Steve
Preischel, president of the Wabash Disc Golf Club of Greater Lafayette. All votes will be taken via
roll call.
Upon motion by Pat Corey, seconded by Matt Metzger, and unanimously carried, minutes of the
August 24, 2020 Parks Board meeting were approved.
Upon motion of Matt Metzger seconded by Dave Mecklenburg, and unanimously carried,
General Fund Claims in the amount of $45,725.45, Non-Reverting Fund Claims in the amount of
$27,702.43 for a total of $73,427.88 were approved.
Superintendent’s Report
Superintendent Laufman introduced Steven Preischel to give an update of
improvements to the McAllister Park Disc Golf Complex. Mr. Preischel also
expressed his gratitude to the Parks Department for an exceptional partnership.
Samantha Haville, Marketing Manager, voiced appreciation for group effort with
Loeb Stadium event. The press exposure extended to coverage in the Indianapolis
Star. An e-newsletter has been developed for Litter Free Lafayette with the first
issue going out 9/8/20. Along with Neil Dale a video has been made
demonstrating the quality of life in our area. Marketing Intern Bridgett Haro
transitioned from seasonal marketing assistant to part-time marketing assistant.
Two remote interns (unpaid Purdue students) also started, taking over Social
Media responsibilities. Samantha is working with the McAllister team to generate
ideas to make up revenue and increase engagement.
Neil Dale, Zoo Director, updated the Board on this year’s Virtual Zoo Run Run.
There were 195 participants and 5 cash sponsors with an overall profit of $4200.
Boo at the Zoo proposal was approved by Mayor Roswarski and the Tippecanoe
County Health Department.
Superintendent Laufman provided project updates on the Penguin Exhibit,
Carousel and Memorial Island. We are still waiting on the amended permit
needed to bring the Penguins to the Zoo. Concrete is being poured and the shelter

structure is taking shape. At Memorial Island, curbs are being poured, the pier by
the train depot is taking shape and the ADA boardwalk for fishing is also being
completed.
Director of Operations, Jon Miner updated on the Loeb Stadium project. Playing
field is cleared of equipment, turf to be arriving in the next few weeks. Digging
footers for the video board and the flag poles. Still working on permanent power.

Written: Response letter to be sent to American Legion Post 11 addressing Loeb Stadium
use is included with meeting minutes as well as original letter sent to Park Board.
There being no further business to come before the Board, on motion of Matt Metzger, seconded
by Pat Corey, and unanimously carried, the meeting adjourned at 4:37pm.
