HOOPER-RENWICK LEGACY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE MINUTES Tuesday, March 16, 2021 Virtual Meeting 6:00 PM 70 S. Clayton St, GA 30046 Call to Order Chair Theresa Bailey called the meeting to order at 6:06 pm. Prayer – Pastor Ronald Dunnigan Committee Member Dunnigan led the prayer. 2. Quorum/Roll Call – Joyce Moore Committee Member Moore completed the roll call of the members and confirmed a quorum. 3. Norms - Vivian S. Daniel Committee Member Daniel reminded everyone of the Norms of behavior for Committee meetings. Chair Bailey asked for a motion to revise the Agenda to include an update presentation from City Manager Chuck Warbington to be inserted before Old Business. Approval of Previous Meeting Minutes – February 16, 2021 Motion to accept the minutes for the February 16, 2021 Hooper-Renwick Legacy Preservation Committee meeting made by Committee Member Moore, Seconded by Committee Member Dunnigan. Voting Yea: Committee Member Bailey, Committee Member Brown, Committee Member Taylor Crawford, Committee Member Dunnigan, Committee Member Glenn, Committee Member Johnson, Committee Member Maxey, Committee Member Moore, Committee Member Neal, Committee Member Brown Taylor, Committee Member Summerour-Daniel Old Business Updates by City Manager Chuck Warbington:  Finalization of the survey on the sites: Gwinnett Co. is doing a phase I test; city has turned over asbestos and land studies, leading up to an April 1st closing with Gwinnett County  City is taking ownership of the detention pond located behind Hooper-Renwick facility; the detention pond facility will be owned by the city, the actual site will be owned by the county  Commissioner Fosque has extended an invitation to the HRLPC to come and give an update in April on where the county stands at this point in the process/progress of the Hooper-Renwick Project, since at this time the county will have acquired ownership of the Hooper-Renwick Facility and will have staff in place.  Interests regarding fund-raising, particularly from the Gwinnett Library Foundation board and others. Chuck has asked all interested parties to please suspend their efforts and interests on fund raising until after the county takes ownership and finishes its conceptual plan, at which time fund raising would be more logical. The goal of $3 - 5 Million was discussed to enhance the facility and the exhibits. Chair Bailey put it to the floor as to whether the committee wanted to accept the Commissioner’s invitation to come to us and give an update on the Hooper-Renwick Project. After some discussion the motion below was made. Motion to accept Commissioner Fosque's invitation to come and give an update on the Hooper- Renwick Project in April made by Committee Member Brown Taylor, Seconded by Committee Member Dunnigan. Voting Yea: Committee Member Bailey, Committee Member Brown, Committee Member Taylor Crawford, Committee Member Dunnigan, Committee Member Glenn, Committee Member Johnson, Committee Member Maxey, Committee Member Moore, Committee Member Neal, Committee Member Brown Taylor 5. Update on Past/Perfect – Marlene Taylor-Crawford Committee Member Taylor-Crawford reminded members that the second Past-Perfect Software Demonstration will be held on 3/23/21, at 3:30 pm. Anyone can attend. Please RSVP. A second reminder and information will be sent out on Sunday 3/21/21. 6. Update on Gathering of Artifacts – Joyce Moore Committee Member Moore reported the following:  List of Artifacts was sent on 1/8/2021, giving us a total of 84 donated items.  We need more items and appealed to the committee members to identify possible donors and get the information to her. She committed to reaching out to those people to acquire items. She stressed that we need more items to go into our museum including pictures. 7. Engaging with FaceBook – Coni Brown Committee Member Brown gave a short presentation on how to connect with Hooper- Renwick School Preservation social media, i.e. Facebook, Instagram. She gave a demonstration as to how to reach and connect to our Facebook page. We will be connecting that page to Instagram as well so that everyone – at large – will be able to see what Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, Georgia is doing in the life of Hooper-Renwick School and build its presence. 8. A Bit of Black History – Rubye Neal Committee Member Neal shared quotes from several poems written by African American authors expressing their emotions related to the black experience in the United States. She also talked about the “Juneteenth” celebration and the multiple stories about the history of its origins. New Business 9. Reconnecting with the HRPC – Chair Theresa Bailey Chair Bailey told the Committee that some concerns had been expressed to her about HRLPC reconnecting with HRPC. She explained that due to the current environment with COVID, we will be extending the opportunity to the community to join our meetings via zoom. This forum is open and public and will be available to the community. 10. Revisiting the Norms – Chair Theresa Bailey Chair Bailey and Committee Member Daniel reviewed the Norms. Discussion ensued within the committee including the options of having the norms on a board or posted somewhere in the room or even included with the agenda when presented to the public. No concrete decision was made regarding the presentation of the norms. However, Chair Bailey committed that she and Members Brown, Daniel and Moore would meet and develop recommendations to be presented at the next Committee meeting. At which time, the Committee will vote on which recommended process we will adopt. Final Adjournment Meeting was adjourned at 7:17 pm by Chair Bailey, with closing prayer by Committee Member Dunnigan.
