HOOPER RENWICK LEGACY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE MINUTES Tuesday, May 17, 2022 Third Floor GwMA Conference Room 6:00 PM 70 S. Clayton St, GA 30046 Call to Order Chairwoman Theresa L. Bailey called the meeting to order at 6:04 pm. 1. Prayer – Ms. Deidra Williams Committee Member Williams led the Committee in an opening prayer. 2. Quorum/Roll Call – Co-Chair, Ms. Joyce Moore Co-Chair, Ms. Joyce Moore conducted Roll Call and quorum was confirmed. Norms – Dr. Vivian Daniel Committee Member Daniel led the Committee through the Norms. Approval of Prior Meeting Minutes 4. Approval of Previous Meeting Minutes – April 19, 2022 - Chairwoman Bailey Motion to approve the minutes from the April 19, 2022 meeting made by Co-Chair Moore, Seconded by Committee Member Dunnigan. Voting Yea: Committee Member Bailey, Committee Member Brown, Committee Member Williams, Committee Member Dunnigan, Committee Member Moore, Committee Member Neal, Committee Member Brown Taylor, Committee Member Summerour-Daniel Old Business 5. Project Status Update – Mr. Mark LeBlanc, Project Manager Project Manager Mark LeBlanc updated the Committee. He said he greatly appreciated everyone’s input during the Healy Kohler update at the last meeting. Please send your feedback regarding the Healy Kohler Exhibit Outline to Paula Foil. Mark said he will bring more design details for Committee input in June or July. The project is going strong and moving forward. Council Member Victoria Jones asked if the project will allow for growth. Mark mentioned that they will be filling the spaces and they will work to keep it updated and fresh to maintain interest. 6. Project Status Report - Ms. Cammie Fulmer, IRPC Cammie Fulmer gave an update on the exhibits. Interchangeability of the various exhibits will allow items to be changed out and updated. It is still very early in the design process, which allows for some flexibility. Some areas will be left blank for fresh information to be included. Interactive panels will be used which will allow people to access parts of the oral histories. There will also be interactive aspects in the exhibit as well that will allow the visitors to engage with the exhibit and those will be changed every now and again. The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners appoints the members of the Historic Restoration Preservation Board. This five-member board meets every other month and they handle all historic preservation matters in Gwinnett County. Their in-person meetings are open to the public and they have virtual options to listen to the meetings. Cammie is reporting the Hooper-Renwick updates to the Board and they are excited about the project. 7. Comments – Mr. Chuck Warbington, City Manager Chuck Warbington shared some of his time with Mayor David Still. Mayor David Still updated the Committee on various items removed from the Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church that will be donated to the Hooper-Renwick Themed Library  project. Mayor Still is doing research to see if there is a way to save the Mt. Zion UMC building. Chuck Warbington gave his update to the Committee. He said the County has started the site plan for the library and when it is complete, we will get renderings for the items outside of the building to share with the Committee. The City is responsible for items outside of the building such as: parking, curb, gutter, electric lines moved underground, and other facelift items for the area. It will be a couple of months before the site plan will be complete, but we will bring plans for the outside updates once they are available. Mr. Warbington reported that Congresswoman Carolyn Bourdeaux announced 15 local projects, which will be submitted to the House Appropriations Committee as part of the FY23 Community Project Funding process. One of the projects is to assist with acquiring print and non-print materials to launch a special collection focused on African-American Heritage items for the Hooper-Renwick Themed Library. The money ($500,000) would be given to the Gwinnett Public Library Foundation to manage. 8. Artifacts – Co-Chair, Joyce Moore Co-Chair Moore gave an update on the artifacts. She reported that 174 items have been committed for donation to the library. She thanked those committee members who had already donated items and encouraged all of them to reach out to others in their communities to make donations. She also reported that Dr. Maxey’s items have all been physically transferred to Cammie Fulmer, IRPC for storage by Gwinnett County. All of the paperwork needed to complete the official donation has been completed and signed. These procedures and documents will be used to record and track all future donations. Cammie is currently working with another donor to complete the paperwork and physical transfer of donated items. New Business 9. Review of “For All the World to See” Exhibit – Council Member Marlene Taylor-Crawford Council Member Marlene Taylor-Crawford presented a compelling PowerPoint that documents in part, the perils of African Americans. She captured some of the exhibits that help to make up this “traveling exhibit” which purposes to enlighten communities, bringing into focus the often-left out details of America’s past. A very poignant display included memorabilia from Hooper-Renwick’s collection of artifacts. Council Member Marlene Taylor- Crawford’s presentation included pictures of both Chairwoman Bailey and Co-Chair Moore as they engaged with other attendees discussing some of the exhibits.
