Community Engagement Commission Minutes
July 19th, 2023 – 6:00 PM
CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting of the Community Engagement Commission was called to order on July 19, 2023, at 6:00 PM.
ROLL CALL:

APPROVALS:
Commissioner Saba motioned to excuse Commissioners Kosaka and Asmus from this meeting. The motion was
seconded by Commissioner Norman, which carried unanimously.
Commissioner Bekkedahl opened discussion regarding the June meeting minutes. Commissioner Norman noted
that the only change would be his absence at the last meeting. Commissioner Norman then motioned for approval
of the June meeting minutes. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Saba, and carried unanimously.
CITIZEN COMMENTS:
No citizen comments were made at this meeting.
CITY HALL UPDATES:
The commissioners briefly went over the available City Hall updates. David Goehner added a brief update from
the previous night’s Council meeting, noting a Civil Service Commission would be added soon. There was also
discussion regarding the budget, and an upcoming opportunity for residents to voice comments about the budget.
DISCUSSIONS
Strategic Plan Survey Discussion
The commissioners, as well as City Administrator, discussed the Strategic Plan survey, and how the participation
benefits the commission and city going forward. Overall, the first survey was successful. The commissioners con-
tinued discussion and suggestions for future surveys.
Farmers Market Updates
The commissioners discussed Farmers Market updates and attendance, and determined sign-ups for upcoming
dates.
Barefoot in the Park
The commissioners discussed the upcoming Barefoot in the Park event, to be held on August 5th at Pavillion Park.
Discussion revolved around attendance, and what to expect from this year’s event as far as commissioner partici-
pation goes. Commissioner Saba went over a new event, a dunk tank, that will be present at this year’s event. City
staff such as the Mayor, Police Chief and others will be in the tank at various times. Touch-A-Truck has also been
incorporated into Barefoot this year, bringing trucks and equipment for the community to view and interact with.
DISCUSSIONS CONTINUED:
2024 Budget Requests
Requests for the 2024 budget are due by August 18th, so final decisions for the commission will need to be made no
later than their August 16th meeting. Mark McAvoy noted that this date may change, and to keep an eye out for any
possible changes. Suggestions were discussed briefly by the commissioners.
Work Plan 2023
The commissioners made no votes or decisions regarding the 2023 work plan at this time.
Other Opportunities
The commissioners briefly discussed other possible opportunities for engagement within the community.
UPCOMING MEETING:
The next meeting of the Community Engagement Commission will take place on August 16th, 2023, at 6:00 PM.
ADJOURNMENT:
There being no further business, and with unanimous approval, the workshop adjourned at approximately 7:10 PM.

The purpose of the Community Engagement Commission is to serve in an advisory capacity
to the mayor and City Council. The Commission’s role is to gather ideas, input, and
feedback from community members, and to advise and guide city leadership.
Under Governor Inslee’s “Washington Ready” plan, members of the public may attend
meetings in person at City Hall at the address provided above, or via Zoom at the link
below. Members of the public will be allowed to comment in person or via Zoom as
described on the last page of this agenda.

• Submit written public comment prior to 4:00 p.m. on July 19, 2023.
