CALL TO ORDER
The Parks and Recreation Commission meeting was called to order by Chair Goldberg at
9:07 a.m., at the El Dorado Park Senior Center. Director Knight took the roll call and
confirmed a quorum.

A motion was made by Commissioner Antonette and seconded by Vice Chair Heggeness to
excuse Commissioner Morales from the January 18, 2018, Parks and Recreation Commission

PRESENTATIONS
Employee of the Month - December 2017
Michelle Wilson introduced Jorge Acevedo. Jorge introduced Pedro Soza as the December
Employee of the Month. Huge congrats to Maintenance Operation’s Pedro Soza for receiving
December employee of the month! Pedro came to work for the City through the Pacific
Gateway an innovative workforce agency dedicated to advancing economic opportunity.
started working for Parks, Recreation and Marine as a Non-career employee in January
2013 and after six months, Pedro was promoted to a full-time Maintenance Assistant I and
then again promoted to a Maintenance Assistant III position. Pedro embodies what it means
to be a team player and a role model of our Maintenance Operation’s core values.

1. 18-001PR Recommendation to approve the Parks & Recreation Commission
Meeting minutes of December 21, 2017.
A motion was made by Vice Chair Heggeness, seconded by
Commissioner Antonette, to approve the recommendation. The
motion carried by the following vote:
Yes: 6 - Ron Antonette, Ron Sievers, Stella Ursua, David Zanatta,
Julie Heggeness and Benjamin Alan Goldberg

Infrastructure section of the Park Equity report and the deferred maintenace in PRM.

Chair Goldberg Presented the Commission and the Department of Parks, Recreation and
Marine with the Honoring our Fallen award for the Rosie the Riveter Honor Wall. Honoring
Our Fallen that is dedicated to providing comprehensive support to the Families of all Fallen
Heroes within 24 hours of notification.

PUBLIC COMMENT: IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO ADJOURNMENT
Opportunity is given to those members of the public who would like to address the Parks and
Recreation Commission on non-agenda items. Each speaker is limited to three minutes
unless extended by the Parks and Recreation Commission. The Brown Act prohibits members
of the Commission from responding to public comment on non-agenda items.

Randy Zarn of Partners of Parks spoke.
STAFF COMMENTS
Gladys Kaiser informed the Commission that the LA Clippers hosted a Basketball Clinic at
Silverado Park, the planning stages of the Summer Fun Days staff trainings and that PRM
was the recipients of the LA Dodgers sports grant.
Bob Livingstone informed the Commission that PRM received approval for the LA Kings to
construct a Hockey Court at Heartwell Park.

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Commissioner Sievers informed the Commission that the Los Cerritos Wetlands Foundation
received support from the Oil Operators.
Vice Chair Heggeness wished the Commission and PRM staff a Happy New Year and hoped
they had a wonderful Holiday Season.
Commissioner Zanatta wished the Commission and PRM staff a Happy New Year and
thanked PRM staff on their hard work with the Equity report.
NEXT MEETING
The next Parks and Recreation Commission meeting will be held on Thursday, February 15,
2018, at the El Dorado Park West Community Center, located at 2800 N. Studebaker Road,
Long Beach, CA 90815.
