CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2019 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY LONG BEACH SENIOR CENTER COMMISSION MINUTES 1150 EAST 4TH STREET, ROOM 202 LONG BEACH, CA 90802, 9:00 AM Robert Finney, Chair Mary Alice Sedillo, Commissioner Winifred W. Carter, Commissioner William Smith, Commissioner Don Darnauer, Commissioner Naida Tushnet, Commissioner Flora Easter, Commissioner Yosh Yamanaka, Commissioner ROLL CALL At 9:06 a.m., Commissioner Finney, called the meeting to order. Commissioners Winifred Carter, Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Mary Sedillo, Present: William Smith, Naida Tushnet, Yosh Yamanaka and Robert Finney INTRODUCTION OF NEW COMMISSIONERS Yosh Yamanaka and Bill Smith were introduced and welcomed to the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Carter led the flag salute. READING OF MISSION STATEMENT Commissioner Sedillo read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life. Commissioner Tushnet volunteered to serve in his place and was appointed acting Vice Chair by Chair Finney. An election shall be held for the Vice Chair position at the March 13th meeting of the Commission. A motion was made by Commissioner Naida Tushnet, seconded by Commissioner William Smith, to approve the recommendation. The motion was carried by the following vote: Yes: 8 - Winifred Carter, Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Mary Sedillo, William Smith, Naida Tushnet, Yosh Yamanaka and Robert Finney GUEST SPEAKER Cristina Coria, Community Relations with LA Metro gave a presentation on the transit as more older adults are using it for transportation purposes. STAFF REPORT Gladys Kaiser, CRS Manager intorduced the new Superintendent, Ted Stevens. Gladys Kaiser, CRS Manager announced Long Beach College offers enrichment programs for seniors. Community Relations - Commissioners Finney and Darnauer - Commissioner Darnauer reported that Commissioner Carter will be celebrating her 100th Birthday on April 13th. B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioner Carter - Commissioner Carter reported on an article and how they are battling over police use of deadly force. C. Health - Commissioner Sedillo - Commissioner Sedillo reported on the town of Calexico and how their River is contaminated. D. Housing - Commissioners Sedillo, Tushnet, and Darnauer - NONE E. Legislation - Commissioners Tushnet and Finney - NONE F. Technology - Commissioner Finney - NONE G. Transportation - Commissioner Darnauer - NONE NEW BUSINESS The Chair brought a LBReport.Com article of 1/16/2019 to the attention of the Commission. That article discussed the conduct of a thorough review of the City’s advisory bodies and the formation of an informal working group to review the status of these bodies and report back to the city council. The Chair expressed his concern that the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission has not been approached about having a representative on that group. Commissioner Finney discussed the Long Beach Task Force report. He also announced the Age Friendly Steering Committee meeting will be held on February 27th. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION: Gray Panther representative, Karen Reside announced they will be holding a Senior Fest on May 4th. NEXT MEETING The General meeting of the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will be held March 13, 2019 at 9:00 am, at Long Beach Senior Center located at 1150 E. 4th Street - Room #202, Long Beach 90802.
