Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting Madison Heights, Michigan August 31, 2023 A Human Relations and Equity Committee Meeting was held on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 6:00 PM at Library - Flexspace 240 W. 13 Mile Rd. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chair Szymanski at 6:02 p.m. ROLL CALL PRESENT Chair Paige Szymanski Nickole Fox Syed Murtaza Alec (Sydney) Larry Council Representative Emily Rohrbach EXCUSED ABSENT Rebecca Chambliss Also present: Staff liaison, Heather Hames; Council Representative Alternate Quinn Wright Motion by N. Fox to excuse Rebecca Chambliss and Colton Chambliss, seconded by S. Murtaza. All ayes, motion passes. ADDITIONS/DELETIONS Motion by Larry to add Roundtable to the agenda. Seconded by Rohrbach. All ayes, motion passes. 1. New Member Welcome Motion by Fox to add official welcome to new member Alec (Sydney) Larry and new student delegate Colton Chambliss. Seconded by Murtaza. All ayes, motion passes. 2. Council Representative Alternate Motion by Rohrbach to allow Council Representative Alternate to be allowed to sit at the table. Seconded by Murtaza. All ayes, motion passes. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 3. Approval of Minutes from August 1, 2023 Motion made by Council Representative Rohrbach, Seconded by Murtaza. Voting Yea: Chair Szymanski, Fox, Murtaza, Council Representative Rohrbach, Abstaining: S. Larry. Motion passes. 1 4. Approval of the Minutes of August 21, 2023 Motion to approve Minutes of August 21, 2023 made by Murtaza, Seconded by Fox. Voting Yea: Chair Szymanski, Fox, Murtaza, Council Representative Rohrbach. Abstaining: S. Larry. Motion passes. MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC None present. EVENTS 5. Motorama & Smoke Event Motion by Council Representative Rohrbach to change the date of Motorama and Smoke event to October 14, 2023. Seconded by Larry. All ayes, motion passes. Motion by Council Representative Rohrbach to read into the minutes this statement about changing the date of the Motorama and Smoke event: The HREC appreciates the feedback from our community for the Motorama and Smoke event. This is why representation is very important and we are grateful City Council brought the conflict between the date we selected and a very important Jewish holiday to our attention. We have changed the date of the event. Seconded by Larry. All ayes, motion passes. Motion by Council Representative Rohrbach to set the registration fees for the Motorama and Smoke event as follows. The BBQ competition will be $50 for chicken, $50 for Ribs, and $25 for kids burger category. These fees will make up the cash prizes to be paid to the winners by check for first, second, and third places in the BBQ cooking competition. Registration fees for cars are to be $10 in advance or $12 on the day of. These fees are fundraiser fees for the HREC. Seconded by Larry. All ayes, motion passes. Motion by Council Representative Rohrbach to spend up to $500 from the CAB grant awarded to the HREC to purchase prizes for the car show participants for first, second, and third places. Seconded by Fox. All ayes, motion passes. Motion by Council Representative Rohrbach to appoint member A. Larry to promote and share information about HREC events throughout the community. Seconded by Larry. All ayes, motion passes. 6. Native Plant Sale Event Motion by Council Representative Rohrbach to move the date of the HREC Native Plant Sale to September 23, 2023. Seconded by Larry. All ayes, motion passes. ROUNDTABLE Roundtable allowed time for members to discuss future ideas such as planning events for adults with disabilities and provide updates on other ongoing projects such as the cookbook. HREC also received confirmation on an equity concern that residents in apartments do receive the city's recreation brochure directly to their mailboxes. ADJOURNMENT 2 Meeting was adjourned at 7:29 pm by Chair Szymanski.
