City of Manistee Parks Commission Minutes Thursday, May 19, 2022 Members Present: Tim O’Connor, Lani Rozga, Karen Peltola, Liz Laskey, Bob Brooks Members Excused: Kelly Greve, Karin Maue Present: Katie Trivisonno, Mickey McCann City of Manistee, Brian Dunlop A regular meeting of the Manistee Parks Commission was held on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall 3rd floor Council Chambers. Meeting was called to order by Chair Tim O’Connor at 5:32pm Approval of Agenda: Changes to New Business, Agenda approved. Public Hearing: N/A Citizen/Public Comments: Brian Dunlop made a brief presentation on the softball fields located at Lighthouse Park. Mr. Dunlop represented the senior softball league and expressed his concerns about the condition of the fields. A few items were noted: Press box is a hazard and should be removed. Fencing-plastic capping on chain link fence is breaking down and should be replaced. Also a few areas chain link bottom sections should be repaired. Dugouts are old and could be updated with shade and increase size of dugouts along with benches. Lighting needs repairs. Fields need resurfacing. Mr. Dunlop asked if they could get a few trash cans at the fields. Tim discussed possible Minger grant and would like to form a sub-committee for grant writing purposes. Approval of Minutes: Motion to approve minutes, noted the Commission would like to receive Lions Pavilion monthly sales reports. Correspondence: Correspondence between Tim and Jen Teller Committee Reports: Disc Golf Update from Mickey Mcann. The cement pads will be poured soon. Old Business: Morton Park-Tim received an equipment list, along with estimate from Jeff Mikula. Tim would like to see a detailed list and pictures of the equipment. Lions Pavilion-The Commission would like the rental fees to go back to Parks Commission fund. Also, would like to see an online rental option. New Business: Liz discussed Day of serving, picnic tables and trash cans. Liz wanted to know if more cans were going to be placed and if the picnic tables were painted. Benches were painted. Field trip- Liz mentioned it would be a good idea to visit Glen Arbor and Empire area. Possibly meet with Glen Arbor Parks Director for a work session meeting. Field trip set for 6/4/22. Additional discussion about the Minger Grant. Round Table Discussion: Lani asked about the condition of 9th street boat launch. Mickey assured her it was in good working order. Tim would like to meet more often, possibly few times a month. Karen recommends purchasing items in the off season. Tim asked about status of basketball courts. Karen checked into local swim lessons and found out the Manistee High School has a recreation program in place. Mickey is getting prices on Shade structures, also mentioned the wheelchair donation at 5th Avenue Beach. Mickey is meeting with gentleman who would like to donate backboards for the courts.
