City of Manistee Parks Commission Minutes Thursday, April 20, 2023 Members Present Kelly Greve, Karen Peltola, Liz Laskey, Karin Maue, John Veach, Tim O’Connor, Lani Rozga Others Present City of Manistee Jeff Mikula, Katie Trivisonno, Mickey McCann A meeting of the Manistee Parks Commission was held on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at 5:30 pm at City Hall, 3rd floor Council Chambers. The meeting was called to order by Chair Liz Laskey. Approval of Agenda Motion by Greve, second by Peltola to approve agenda. All in favor. Approval of Minutes Motion by O’Connor, second by Maue to approve March 16 minutes. All in favor Correspondence Jen Teller reported on Adopt-A-Park, 1st Street Beach. Teller made a request for playground equipment placed at Morton Park. Citizen/Public Comment Linda from Sands Park Teen Center asked about power washing on River Street. Ed Tegler Adopt-A-Park for 5th Avenue Beach. Ed would like to help clean up the beach area, paint the playground equipment and flagpole. Trees need trimming. Mikula gave an update on 5th Avenue, proposed improvements include repaving the parking lot, add retaining wall and repaving section of street near Coastguard station. Committee Reports Morton Park-Playground equipment is ready for paint. Trash cans have been ordered. DPW will start constructing the basketball court and the Water Dept is scheduled to run water service to park. Bylaws-Revised Parks Bylaws were tabled by City Council. Maue will attend the Council’s Work Session to answer questions. Disc Golf-Benches and trash receptacles placement. Discussion on Grand Opening, t shirt logo design, sponsors, and food trucks. The Grand Opening is scheduled for May 20,, 2023. Marina Project-Greve is raising funds for marina improvements. DPW trimmed the trees in the park and constructed a new patio. Lions Pavilion-YTD revenue is $2150. Funds will be used for future projects. A few projects include painting cabanas, new display case and flower planters. The Commission would like to see an online reservation system. Mikula mentioned the DPW will install patio and firepit. Library Story Hour-Summer events include story hour in the parks. The library will provide a calendar of events. Movies in the Park-Vogue Theater suggested using the Swank Company for licensing and movies in the parks. O’Connor suggested collaborating with Vogue and Ramsdell. Grants Riverwalk South-Contract with Fishbeck Engineering was approved, survey work has started. New Business Stargazing-Maue met with Brooke Edwards, volunteered to host stargazing events this summer. Clean Water Recovery Facility Open house, May 18, 2023, 9am- 12 noon. Sands Park Teen Center-Next meeting April 27, Thursday at 6:00pm, public welcome to attend. Mikula gave an update on demolition of tennis courts and street/sidewalk improvements. Spring 2024. Amphitheater Feasibility Study- Peltola reported the RFPs went out and they received two interested parties. Presentation and Q&A is scheduled for week of April 24. Round Table Discussion Fencing needs at Rotary Park. Garden Club is having Gold Star Mother memorial event at Veterans Park at June 11 at 2:00pm. Peltola would like to donate 10 basketballs to the Parks/courts. Mikula gave update on 1st Street loop paving, additional parking spaces, Concessioners are getting ready to open for the season. Electricians are adding electrical outlets to Sands and Duffy parks ball fields. New Banners were installed along 1st Street. Adjourn Motion by Peltola, second by Greve to adjourn at 7:12pm.
