Special Business Welcome new committee Mark Ustimchuk was sworn in, shared about himself, and members was welcomed to the Arbor Committee. Old Business Tree condemnation update City Forester DeGroy gave an update on the number of hazardous trees that have been condemned on commercial properties, as well as the number of businesses that have been in compliance or are in the process of abating the hazards. Parking Lot Subcommittee The Parking Lot Subcommittee gave an update on their update meeting on September 5, 2024. City staff would welcome input from the Arbor Committee on alternative methods to calculate minimum tree requirements on developments. Piket shared some examples from nearby cities but said that more research would be needed. Buckthorn Group update Tom Anderson from the Maple Grove Buckthorn Group (MG Buckthorn) and Rotary spoke to the committee about the  volunteer buckthorn removal events that the group has been holding every two weeks. Anderson went on to share information about upcoming tree plantings, and an idea he had for a city buckthorn pick-up program. Pollinator Garden update City Forester DeGroy passed on an update from Ben Jaszewski, Superintendent of Parks and Planning regarding the pollinator garden project. City staff is working on getting irrigation installed. The design process will begin in October, with the plan to order materials in January with an early May installation. Tree Sale update City Forester DeGroy gave an update that 20% of the allotted trees have been sold in the 2024 tree sale. Fall tree plantings The committee discussed potential dates for seedling plantings for the fall. City Forester DeGroy will follow up with an email that proposes dates, and will facilitate feedback from the committee. New Business Interactive tree inventory Henke sent examples of interactive tree inventories for City Forester DeGroy to share with the committee. Consensus was that the examples are interesting, but shouldn’t be a priority for the city at this time. Vicksburg street cleanup Chair Parenteau shared information about the street cleanup events with the new committee members, and proposed September 25, 2024 as the date for the next event. Area reports City Forester DeGroy shared landscape plans for CSAH-101 & CSAH-10, Maple Grove Transit Station, Norheim Townhomes, and Minnesota Rural Electric Association. RECOMMENDED ARBOR COMMITTEE ACTION: None at this time. COMMENTS: As of October 10, 2024: of the 182 trees, 177 have been removed or the property owner has contacted me with intent to have them removed. 177 trees is just over 97%. The subcommittee researched different methods for calculating minimum tree requirements on developments. COMMENTS: Maple Grove’s current landscape ordinance requires one overstory tree for every 40 perimeter feet of the lot being developed. This is an imperfect system, especially in regards to subdivisions and oddly-shaped parcels. The city welcomes the Arbor Committee’s suggestions for alternate ways to calculate overstory tree requirements. RECOMMENDED ARBOR COMMITTEE ACTION: None COMMENTS: 82 of the 117 allotted trees were ordered, meaning we have sold 70% of the allotted trees. The most popular item was the vanilla strawberry hydrangea tree with 22 sold. The remaining 35 trees will be utilized by the city this fall or in spring of 2025. The tree pickup event will take place on Saturday, October 12 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Maple Grove Public Works.
