POLICE AND FIRE COMMISSION MINUTES
June 20, 2024 at 5:30 PM
303 Mansion Street Mauston, WI
1. Call to Order/Roll Call- The Police and Fire Commission met at a special meeting on June 20,
2024, in the Council Chambers of Mauston City Hall. Chair McGuire called the meeting to order at
5:40 p.m. Members present were Jack Hammer, Brian McGuire, and Gary Purvis. Absent was
Katie Gruman. Also present were Fire Chief Brent Lenorud, and Police Chief Mike Zilisch.
2. Oath of Office to Deborah Shuman-Chief Zilisch administered the Oath of Office to Ms.
Shuman. The PFC welcomed her and thanked her for her willingness to serve.
3. Minutes-McGuire/Purvis to approve the Minutes of the May 23, 2024 meeting. Motion carried by
voice vote.
4. Financial Report-Purvis/McGuire to approve the Financial Report as presented. Motion carried by
voice vote.
5. Fire Chief's Report
a. The calls for service in May 2024 were reviewed and explained.
b. Chief Lenorud reported that the tanker chassis had been ordered. PFC requested that the list
of calls be included in the packet.
c. McGuire/Hammer to approve the Fire Department report. Motion carried on a voice vote.
d. Hammer/Purvis motion to table any discussion and action regarding the fire department
probationary policy and the corresponding change in the Standard Operating Guidelines
(SOGs). Motion carried on a voice vote.
6. Police Chief's Report
a. The May 2024 statistical reports were reviewed and explained. The total calls for service in
May 2024 was 1251 while in May 2023, there were 1408. Last month, there were 1294 calls.
b. Chief Zilisch reported that the new 2025 squad was ordered and is expected to be delivered
by the end of the year. The cost of the vehicle and the cost of changing over the equipment
continues to rise. He also informed the PFC that in July, there will be Rescue Task Force training
with the Fire Dept. and Mauston EMS. He hopes to involve other county Fire Depts. as well.
c. There was some discussion regarding hiring and recruitment of a police officer because there
have been no qualified applicants. Chief will explore alternatives to recruitment including such
things as bonus pay upon sign-on or paying a candidate to attend school and training. Chief
Zilisch will have more information for the PFC at a future meeting.
d. Hammer/Purvis to approve the Police Chief’s report. Motion carried by voice vote.
7. Adjourn
Shuman/McGuire to adjourn – motion carried by voice vote – meeting adjourned at 6:31 p.m.
