POLICE AND FIRE COMMISSION MINUTES
August 27, 2024 at 5:30 PM
303 Mansion Street Mauston, WI
1. Call to Order/Roll Call- The Police and Fire Commission held a regular meeting on August 27,
2024, in the Council Chambers of Mauston City Hall. Vice Chair Gruman called the meeting to
order at 5:37 p.m. The members present were Jack Hammer, Katie Gruman, Deborah Shuman,
and Gary Purvis. Absent was Brian McGuire. Also present were Police Chief Mike Zilisch, Fire
Chief Brent Lenorud, and City Administrator Daron Haugh.
2. Minutes-Purvis/Gruman to approve the Minutes of the July 18, 2024, regular meeting and August
7, 2024, special meeting. Motion carried by voice vote.
3. Financial Report-Hammer/Shuman to approve the Financial Report as presented. Motion carried
by voice vote.
4. Fire Department Probationary Policy-Hammer/Gruman motion to approve the revised
Probationary Policy with the addition of a signature line and date line along with the understanding
that all employees will sign and it will be retroactive to new employees who have served less than
12 months. Motion carried by voice vote. Note – Haugh left the meeting at 5:52 p.m.
5. Fire Chief's Report-
a. The calls for service in July 2024 were reviewed and explained. Chief Lenorud reported that
Chis Carioscia and Richard Hale were promoted to Lieutenant, and Bob Resch was promoted
to Captain. Gruman/Purvis motion to approve the Fire Chief’s Report. Motion carried by voice
vote.
Hammer/Shuman to approve the hiring of Peter Treml as a firefighter. Motion carried by voice
vote, and the PFC welcomes Treml back to the department.
b. Discussion and action of the hiring of Peter Treml to the Fire Department
6. Police Chief's Report
a. The July 2024 statistical reports were reviewed and explained. The total calls for service in
July 2024 was 1454 while in July 2023, there were 1520. Last month, there were 1483 calls.
Chief Zilisch reported on various trainings that were completed including Rescue Task Force,
Viken Scan, and firearms qualification. Additionally, he is researching various grants.
Shuman/Gruman to approve the Police Chief’s report. Motion carried by voice vote.
7. Adjourn- Hammer/Gruman to adjourn – motion carried by voice vote – meeting adjourned at 6:26
p.m.
