POLICE AND FIRE COMMISSION MINUTES October 24, 2024 at 5:30 PM 303 Mansion Street Mauston, WI 1. Call to Order/Roll Call: The Police and Fire Commission held a regular meeting on October 24, 2024, in the Council Chambers of Mauston City Hall. Chair Brian McGuire called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. The members present were Jack Hammer, Katie Gruman, Brian McGuire, and Gary Purvis. Absent was Deborah Shuman. Police Chief Mike Zilisch, Fire Chief Brent Lenorud, and City Administrator Daron Haugh were also present. 2. Minutes: Purvis/Gruman motioned to approve the minutes of September 26, 2024. Motion carried by voice vote. 3. Financial Report: Gruman/Purvis motioned to approve the Financial Report as presented. Motion carried by voice vote. 4. Fire Chief's Report: The calls for service in September 2024 were reviewed and explained. Chief Lenorud reported that training is ongoing, and the documentation of what training is occurring and who receives the training is being kept. The PFC requested follow-up so that all Officers have the documentation of their Officer training. McGuire/Gruman motion to approve the Fire Chief’s Report. Motion carried by voice vote. 5. Police Chief's Report: The September 2024 statistical reports were reviewed and explained. The total calls for service in September 2024 were 1381 while in September 2023, there were 1385. Last month, there were 1587 calls. Chief Zilisch reported that the PD drone was used to assist the New Lisbon PD in locating an individual. He also shared that the Mauston City Council approved an extra patrol officer position and to proceed with the application for the COPS grant. Chief Zilisch informed the PFC that a vehicle was purchased for the Detective from a local dealer through the use of asset forfeiture funds. He also let the PFC know that Officer Waltemath has recently completed his one-year of service. Finally, Chief Zilisch reported that new Patrol Officer Walker Kierstyn was sworn in, and the City was able to purchase Officer Kierstyn’s K9 partner, Lana, from his previous employer using funds from the Juneau County K9 fundraisers. Hammer/McGuire to approve the Police Chief’s report. Motion carried by voice vote. 6. Closed Session: Pursuant to Wisconsin State Statute 19.85(1)(c) for annual evaluations of the Police Chief and Fire Chief. Hammer/Purvis motion to go into Closed Session. Motion carried on a 4-0 roll call vote at 6:07 p.m. 7. Reconvene in Open Session: Hammer/McGuire motioned to reconvene in Open Session. Motion carried on a voice vote at 7:21 p.m. Note – Chief Lenorud left the meeting from Closed Session at 6:32 p.m 8. Result of Closed Session Matters: There was nothing to report out of Closed Session 9.
