POLICE AND FIRE COMMISSION MINUTES
November 21, 2024 at 5:30 PM
303 Mansion Street Mauston, WI
1. Call to Order/Roll Call: The Police and Fire Commission held a regular meeting on November 11,
2024, in the Council Chambers of Mauston City Hall. Chair Brian McGuire called the meeting to
order at 5:30 p.m. The members present were Jack Hammer, Katie Gruman, Brian McGuire, and
Deborah Shuman. Absent was Gary Purvis. Police Chief Mike Zilisch, Fire Chief Brent Lenorud,
Assistant Fire Chief Nelson, and City Administrator Daron Haugh were also present.
2. Minutes: McGuire/Hammer to approve the Minutes of the 10/24/2024 meeting. Motion carried by
voice vote.
3. Financial Report: Gruman/Hammer to approve the Financial Report as presented. Motion carried
by voice vote.
4. Fire Department:
a. Fire Chief Report: The calls for service in October 2024 were reviewed and explained.
Chief Lenorud reported that Firefighter Andres has submitted his resignation. He also
informed
the PFC that they will be going to pick up the new tanker on December 12 and they have
been researching specifications for a new brush truck.
b. Goals: The PFC and Chief Lenorud discussed and decided upon three goals for the
upcoming year: try to get an officer training class in Mauston, review and update the
MABAS system, and work on recruiting new firefighters.
c. Holiday Party: McGuire/Hammer motion to approve the use of the fire station for the Fire
Dept. holiday party with alcohol. The motion failed on a 2-2 roll call vote.
Hammer/Gruman motion to approve the Fire Chief’s Report. Motion carried by voice vote.
5. Police Department: The October 2024 statistical reports were reviewed and explained. The total
calls for service in October 2024 was 1267 while in October 2023, there were 1289 calls. Last
month, there were 1381 calls. Chief Zilisch reported that the 2025 squad was in and they were
waiting to get it outfitted. He also told the PFC that they were waiting for a K9 cage for the new K9
patrol officer.
Gruman/Shuman to approve the Police Chief’s report. Motion carried by voice vote. Chief Zilisch
left the meeting at 6:24 p.m.
6. Closed Session: Pursuant to Wisconsin State Statute 19.85(1)(c) for a discussion on Fire Dept.
Officer pay. McGuire/Gruman motion to go into Closed Session. The motion carried on a 4-0 roll
call vote at 6:25 p.m.
7. Reconvene in Open Session: Hammer/Shuman to reconvene in Open Session. Motion carried
on a voice vote at 6:48 p.m.
8. Result of Closed Session Matters: Currently, the Fire Lieutenants and Fire Captains are not paid
positions. In recognition of their increased roles and responsibilities, the PFC voted to pay them a
stipend. Hammer/McGuire motion to pay each Lieutenant a stipend of $750 per year and each
Captain a stipend of $1000 per year starting January 1, 2025. The motion carried on a voice vote.
9. Adjourn: Gruman/Shuman to adjourn – motion carried by voice vote – meeting adjourned at 6:52
p.m.
