POLICE AND FIRE COMMISSION MINUTES
May 21, 2025 at 5:30 PM

1. Call to Order/Roll Call:
The Police and Fire Commission met on May 21, 2025, in the Council Chambers of Mauston
City Hall. Vice Chair Katie Gruman called the meeting to order at 5:36 p.m. Members present
were Jack Hammer, Katie Gruman, Gary Purvis, and Brian McGuire (whoarrived at 5:42 p.m.).
Deborah Shuman was absent. Also present were Police Chief Mike Zilisch, Fire Chief Brent
Lenorud, and City Administrator Daron Haugh.
2. Appointment of Commission Chair:
Motion by Hammer, seconded by Gruman, to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for
Brian McGuire. Motion passed on a voice vote.
3. Appointment of Commission Vice Chair:
Motion by Hammer, seconded by Gruman, to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for
Gary Purvis. Motion passed on a voice vote.
4. Appointment of Commission Secretary:
Motion by McGuire, seconded by Gruman, to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for
Jack Hammer. Motion passed on a voice vote.
5. Minutes:
Motion made by Purvis, seconded by Gruman, to approve the minutes of the April 24, 2025,
meeting. Motion passed on a voice vote.
6. Financial Report:
Motion made by Purvis, seconded by Gruman, to approve the Financial Report as presented.
Motion passed on a voice vote.
7. Fire Chief's Report:
The April 2025 calls for service were reviewed and explained. Chief Lenorud reported that hose
testing has been taking place during meeting nights and that two new firefighter applications were
received. He also noted the recent Open House event was well-attended, and positive feedback
was received. Motion made by Hammer, seconded by Purvis, to approve the Fire Chief’s Report.
Motion passed on a voice vote.
8. Police Chief's Report:
a. Chief Zilisch reviewed the April 2025 statistical report. There were 1,727 total calls for
service in April 2025, compared to 1,294 in April 2024 and 1,713 calls last month.
Noteworthy statistics included 24 combined K-9 deployments and 57 You Are Not Alone
(YANA) contacts. Chief Zilisch also reported that the mental health awareness fundraiser
for green badges was successful, raising enough funds for the Mauston Police
Department, New Lisbon Police Department, and Juneau County Sheriff’s Department so
that each could receive the green badges. He mentioned upcoming K-9 fundraising
events and noted that the Dunkin’ Donuts “Cops on a Rooftop” event raised between
$800-900 for Special Olympics. Motion made by McGuire, seconded by Gruman, to
approve the Police Chief’s Report. Motion passed on a voice vote.
b. Recognition of Detective Richard Lueneburg for 20 years of service with the Mauston
Police Department.
9. Adjourn:
Motion made by Hammer, seconded by Gruman, to adjourn. Motion passed on a voice vote.
