POLICE AND FIRE COMMISSION MINUTES
July 24, 2025 at 5:30 PM
303 Mansion Street Mauston, WI
1. Call to Order/Roll Call: The Police and Fire Commission met on July 24, 2025, in the Council
Chambers of Mauston City Hall. Chair Brian McGuire called the meeting to order at 5:32 p.m.
Members present were Jack Hammer, Katie Gruman, Gary Purvis, and Brian McGuire. Deborah
Shuman was absent. Also present were Police Chief Mike Zilisch, Fire Chief Lenorud, and City
Administrator Daron Haugh.
2. Minutes: Motion by McGuire, seconded by Gruman, to approve the minutes of the June 26,
2025, meeting. Motion passed by voice vote.
3. Financial Report: Motion by Purvis, seconded by Gruman, to approve the Financial Report as
presented. Motion passed by voice vote.
4. Fire Chief's Report: The calls for service in June 2025 were reviewed and explained. Chief
Lenorud reported that the Fire Department is in the process of hiring another firefighter. He also
informed the PFC that the new brush truck came in and he got verbal confirmation of receiving a
50% grant for a skid for the brush truck. Motion by McGuire, seconded by Hammer, to approve
the Fire Chief’s Report. Motion passed by voice vote.
5. DNR Memorandum of Understanding for Mutual Aid and Fire Suppression Services:
Motion by Gruman, seconded by Purvis, to authorize the Fire Chief to submit the Memorandum
of Understanding to the DNR. Motion passed by voice vote.
6. Emergency Billing Appeal: Mr. Barebo did not attend the meeting nor was there contact to
reschedule. Motion by Gruman, seconded by Hammer, to deny the appeal. Motion passed by
voice vote.
Note: City Administrator Haugh and Fire Chief Lenorud left the meeting at 5:55 p.m.
7. Police Chief’s Report: The June 2025 statistical reports were reviewed and explained. The
total calls for service in June 2025 was 1,946 while in June 2024, there were 1,483 calls. Last
month, there were 1,744 calls. Chief Zilisch pointed out that this volume of calls indicated the
proactive nature of the patrol officers and of the Police Department. He also noted that the
number of citations, warnings, violations, and traffic stops have doubled from last year,
indicating that the officers are active in patrolling the city for safety and security. The “You Are
Not Alone” calls are averaging around 55, and the people involved in the program look forward
to the calls. Chief Zilisch also informed the PFC that the “Cops at Culver’s” day is next Tuesday,
July 29, 2025 and benefits the Lights of Christmas program. The National Night Out at Veterans
Park is August 5. Motion by Hammer, seconded by McGuire, to approve the Police Chief’s
Report. Motion passed by voice vote.
8. Adjourn: Motion by McGuire, seconded by Purvis, to adjourn. Motion passed by voice vote.
