Public Safety Commission FIRE DEPARTMENT August 21, 2023 **Hybrid City Hall - Room 208 -----------Meeting Minutes---------- 1. CALL TO ORDER Commissioner Ford called the meeting to order at 6:31 p.m. 2. ATTENDANCE MEMBERS PRESENT: Commissioner Darnell Ford Commissioner Anthony Mangiafico Commissioner Phil Pessina Commissioner Linda Salafia MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioner Meghan Carta STAFF PRESENT: Fire Chief Jay Woron Deputy Fire Chief Dave Albert Police Chief Erik Costa 3. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING Commissioner Ford entertained a motion to approve the minutes from July 17, 2023, Commissioner Pessina so moved, Commissioner Mangiafico seconded, and all voted in favor to accept the meeting minutes as presented. 4. PUBLIC HEARING 5. CORRESPONDENCE  Home Depot sent a letter of appreciation for participation in their Employee Appreciation Night  The YMCA sent a thank you for allowing campers to tour the headquarters firehouse 6. MONTHLY REPORT  Chief Woron gave the monthly report: o 311 emergency runs for the month o Major incidents:  Structure fire on Glendale Avenue – mutual aid provided to Westfield Fire  Assisted with an officer shooting on Liberty Street Page 1 of 3   1150 South Main Street structure fire – assisted South Fire District  Overturned abandoned vessel on the Ct. River o Events:  DCF held a back to school event – fire apparatus attended  Snow School had a public ed. event in which the fire marshals, an engine, & the smoke trailer attended  One hundred YMCA campers toured fire headquarters  Shooting Range Committee in person meeting held at the new location  National Night Out – EMS coverage provided and the smoke trailer was in attendance  CBB monthly meeting attended by Chief Woron  Cromwell Fire Swearing In Ceremony attended by Chief Woron & Deputy Chief Albert  Attended Westfield Fire’s retirement party for Fire Marshal Higgins  Deputy Chief Albert attended the Active Violence tabletop hosted by Westfield Fire  Kiwanis Golf tournament attended by Chief Woron  Ride along done by one of the new dispatchers for familiarization o Training:  All four shifts did a walk-through of Liberty Bank headquarters  Ongoing company operations of roof top ventilation done on River Road  Dive Team & Marine Team training done  Int’l Association of Firefighters hazmat group came in & did LNG training  Finished extrication training on vehicles  Drone pilots continue to train weekly 7. OLD BUSINESS o Overtime  High due to three vacancies & five out on FMLA  OT report will be submitted to the Mayor & the commission to outline o City wide EMS:  923 calls with four mutual aid ambulance  Middlesex Hospital finally awarded by OEMS & allowed to purchase ten additional ambulances o New fire apparatus update:  Moving along nicely – well along in production o IAFC video  Filmed last month  Chief Woron will send a link to the commission to view video 8. NEW BUSINESS o Met with dispatch, South Fire District chief, and the Westfield Fire chief to discuss dispatching issues – all rectified o Clean Space meeting  Came in to discuss full face respirator for the fire marshals  Money populated in this year’s CNR to cover this purchase  Fire investigators in the fire service contract cancer at a higher rate than firefighters  Putting an order in for four respirators Public Safety Meeting – August 21, 2023 minutes Page 2 of 3  o Notification system at fire headquarters  Being replaced – no longer works  To be installed within the next two weeks o Cross Street roof  Flashing issues  Roofing company coming in to repair o New recruits (3)  Coming in to complete paperwork – heading to fire academy next week o As of January 1st a Battalion Chief and a firefighter will be retiring  Two additional recruits will attend the February recruit school o All portable radios were tuned 9. Monthly Summary of Action Taken by the Telecommunications Committee Brief summary of monthly report given as follows:  4,796 monthly calls, 2,590 911 calls, and 7.607 administrative calls  Staffing at 19 with two in training o Retirement upcoming in December  No activity on the Mile Lane tower  RFP for feasibility study closed on August 4th  Deep cleaning of consoles done in dispatch  Site maintenance done on Mile Lane & Aircraft Road  All yearly fiscal agreements signed 12.
