Staff Presentation/Committee Member Questions Senior Associate Planner Chris Schmidt presented the Agenda Report and answered Committee Members’ questions. Vice-Chair Tregenza asked if the existing sign is permitted and if the proposed sign is illuminated. Mr. Schmidt clarified that all new signs must submit a planning application and there is no proposed lighting. Applicant None. Public Comments None. Committee Member Comments None. Staff Presentation/Committee Member Questions Senior Associate Planner Chris Schmidt presented the Agenda Report and answered Committee Members’ questions. Chair Hunter asked if the lighting would be down facing. Mr. Schmidt explained the existing lighting is down facing and the proposed lighting is down facing but the applicant will need to provide photometrics. Mr. Schmidt referred to the staff report and explained there will be a mix of trees, shrubs, and ground cover. Vice-Chair Tregenza asked if the applicant will paint the building. Mr. Schmidt referred to the applicant. Applicant Doug Roberts, architect and applicant, explained the project in more detail. Mr. Roberts stated they have no plans to paint the building and stated they would like the option to build a 7-foot fence. Committee Member Carter asked if the applicant wants the fence to be 7 feet rather than 6 feet and if Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) uses the stored vessels. Mr. Roberts said they may want to make it 7 feet and he is unsure if MBARI uses the stored vessels. Public Comments None. Committee Member Comments None. On a motion by Committee Member Pauly, seconded by Committee Member Carter, and carried by the following vote, the Architectural Review Committee approved Architectural Review Application ARP-23-0033 for preliminary and final architectural review of exterior alterations including new landscaping and fencing at 500-528 Foam Street with the added condition that the rear fence may go up to 7 feet: AYES: 5 MEMBERS: Hunter, Tregenza, Carter, Pauly, Schmidt NOES: 0 MEMBERS: None ABSENT: 1 MEMBERS: Ostovar ABSTAIN: 0 MEMBERS: None RECUSED: 0 MEMBERS: None 5. Committee Member Comments Vice-Chair Tregenza asked what the measurements of the signs are in the surrounding buildings. Committee Member Schmidt spoke in favor of the project and asked for clarification on operating hours. Mr. Mata said the proposed sign is consistent with the surrounding signs. Mr. Buggert stated at least a portion of the operating hours would be at nighttime. Principal Planner Rover added there will be inpatient care.
