Montpelier Tree Board
Minutes for October 3, 2013 Meeting, 5:30-6:20pm City Hall
In attendance: John Akielaszek, Jeff Schumann, John Snell and guests Ken Libertoff,
John VanDeren, Carole Naquin,
With apologies: Sarah Hoffmeier
• John A updated us on ash inventory; 340 street trees have been added thus far as
well as 606 trees in Hubbard Park. They are finding some clusters of ash that are
not on the street and have been able in several cases to get property owners to help
monitor them. Much of the city has been inventoried in the past month and the goal
is to complete the survey by the end of the month. John A and John S will make a
presentation to City Council on Oct 23 with initial information about the Emerald
Ash Borer plan.
• Jeff updated us regarding the nursery, which has been very well tended thanks to
Stephanie and the Park’s crew. Jeff says there are a number of trees that can be
bare-rooted this fall; Jeff will provide a list of species. He also suggested we remove
any trees that have grown too large to move. All agreed to a workday on 10/24
10am (with Stephanie and crew digging the day before if possible) and also 10/16
2:00 (if good for Stephanie and crew); John S will confirm with Stephanie and notify
all. John S will also identify more locations to plant out trees.
• Grates/guards:
John S suggested we re-inventory needs for grates/guards and then put in a request
for capital improvement funds with the city (due Oct 18); he will take the lead. He
and Ken will meet next week to get Ken started on doing some fundraising, initially
for grates and guard but also for trees.
Jeff asked, since guards can/are used for bike lockup, could we not promote their
dual role with the City and possible justify other funding
John S will also talk with Geoff Beyer about getting more wooden guards made.
• Montpelier Alive (Park)ing Day (Sept 20): John S updated that we had set up a
parklet along with Parks and North Branch Nature Center in front of Capitol
Grounds which all agreed was a success.
Next meeting: Thursday, November 7th, 5:30-6:30, at City Hall
