June 7th, 2018 Health and Wellness Commission Minutes
Commission Members present: Patrick, Meghan, Colleen, Christine, and Ryan
Members telephonically present: Abigail and Lauri
Reviewed and voted on new mission statement for HWC
o “Guided by the principles of equity and sustainability, the mission of the Health
and Wellness Commission is to contribute to efforts to create a culture of health
in Morgantown, West Virginia.”
Reviewed and voted on framework
o Robert Wood Johnson framework is our new framework
Update of Blue Zones working with WVU
o Discussed collaboration between WVU and City
o Blue Zone is willing to come and present about their process for the city
o Discussed importance of having Blue Zone presentation before the Committee of
the Whole and having a more in-depth meeting with stakeholders (BOPARC, Bike
Board, Pedestrian Safety, etc.) prior to the Committee of Whole meeting
o Preferred date discussed for presentation would be at the next Committee of
Whole meeting on July 31st.

o Planning date on 8/10/18, from 8:30-4:30 at Botanical Gardens

o Proposal for City of Morgantown employees to have sick days
o Would like to present why they want to pass this ordinance in City of
Morgantown
o Discussed inviting: City Attorney, Health Department, City Council, and
Mainstreet Morgantown
Voted that HWC meetings continue to start at 7:00
Community Health Needs Assessment Meeting update
o Defined “community” as Monongalia County, no additional data will be collected
outside of Monongalia County
o Within the week a rough draft, with our recommendations of the survey will
come out for review, I will pass it along at that time.
o Discussed HWC providing ideas to distribute survey, let CHNA leadership know
that Christine has played a role in surveying individuals in a lower
socioeconomical status.
o Next meeting being planned for July

Action Items and responsibilities for August 2, 2018:
Communicate with facilitators who submitted proposals for planning day-Colleen
Secure funding, venue, and food for planning day-Colleen
Work with Blue Zones on proposed meeting-Colleen
Work with WV Center for Budget and Policy on August 2nd, and invite other
stakeholders-Colleen
Type and distribute minutes: Meghan
Represent HWC interest with CHNA project-Meghan
