Motion seconded by Mr. Valdez. Motion unanimously approved and passed. Correspondence/Communication/Committee Reports 1. Creative District – Mr. Coutts shared details with the committee about the upcoming Juneteenth Celebration on June 22, 2024, at McCosh Park and shared a flyer for the Summer Concert Series lineup. 2. Arts Committee – Mr. Coutts shared that the Arts Committee is looking for a new committee member, so Board members are encouraged to let Ms. Boyd know of anyone who may be interested. 3. Code Development & Design Standards Committee – Mr. Coutts shared that the new code changes remain under review with both the City Council and the Planning Commission. Museum Update Mr. Coutts shared a few museum updates including field trip numbers and the next gallery show, Banishing World America, which opens July 12, 2024. He shared there are two new museum instructors, as well. Mr. Coutts provided a brief update on the museum pods redesign and museum visitation numbers, which are still trending up. Recreation Update Ms. Hoiness shared a few recreation updates including Surf ‘n Slide (SNS) staff trainings to ensure safety ahead of the SNS opening full time, swim lessons, and aquatic programs. She also shared other programs starting up including Explorer’s Day Camp, new volleyball league, Mobile Rec, and several summer camps. Ms. Hoiness shared that ballfields continue to be utilized by both baseball and softball leagues. Ms. Hoiness shared that staff are looking at how to maximize space at the Larson Recreation Center (LRC) 1 PARKS, RECREATION & CULTURAL SERVICES June 12, 2024 ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES with day camp and meeting/event rentals. She advised that rentals are in high demand and recreation classes are steady, so staff are trying to think of creative ways to gain pass holders. Ms. Hoiness shared a brief update on the Trails Planning Team, specifically focusing on trails map and priorities. Mr. Harshman suggested looking into crowdsourcing map, which can assist digital data gathering of public input about public launch sites. Parks Update Mr. Aukett shared that crews continue to prepare the water park for opening and ongoing maintenance and working on irrigation schedules for parks not irrigated with lake water. He shared the refurbishing of docks for fireworks launchpad is going well and crews are getting volunteer inquiries for helping maintain parks. Mr. Perry asked about the shade structure mentioned previously to be used at Lower Peninsula Park, which Mr. Aukett does not have any new updates, but this is still in the works for some time in the future. Mr. Harshman asked whether Park Maintenance is dialing back efforts of water use at parks not on lake water, to which Mr. Coutts explained that significant strides have been taken and leaders are looking to make more improvements particularly on planter strips where zeroscaping efforts could be utilized. Mr. Coutts advised that sports fields have some exclusions to maintain the fields for play. Director’s Report 1. Chiller Ice Arena and Dano Sports Courts – Mr. Coutts shared that City Council approved moving forward with both the chiller ice arena and Dano Park sports courts projects. 2. Longview and Sun Terrace Parks Grant Applications – Mr. Coutts shared the presentation for Sun Terrace and Longview Parks applications with the board, which outlines details of each park design phase, work to be done, costs, etc. 3. Spring Fest Review – Mr. Coutts provided a brief overview of this year’s successful event and a recap meeting with SpringFest will occur next week. 4. Fireworks Update – Mr. Coutts shared a brief update that fireworks will be the evening of July 3, 2024. 5. PR&CS Board Vacancy – Mr. Coutts shared that Jamie Umana is now a PR&CS Department employee and is no longer eligible to serve as a PR&CS Board Member or vice-chair of the board. He went on to advise that a replacement search is happening, and we are focusing on someone with an arts or cultural services background. Mr. Coutts advised that a new vice-chair needs to be appointed. Ms. Rios nominated Brad Harshman as vice-chair. Nomination was seconded by Mr. Perry. Nomination unanimously approved. Adjournment Mr. Harshman moved to adjourn the meeting. Motion seconded by Mr. Perry. Motion unanimously approved.
