TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA
RECREATION COMMITTEE
Monday, March 1, 2021
Municipal Complex, Council Chambers
100 Ann Edwards Lane, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464
Minutes
Members Present: Gary Santos, Chair; Jake Rambo, G. M. Whitley
Staff Present: Eric DeMoura, Steve Gergick
1. Call to order
Mr. Santos called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m.
2. Approval of Minutes from the February 1, 2021 meeting
Ms. Whitley made a motion to approve the minutes of the February
1, 2021 meeting. Mr. Rambo seconded the motion. All were in favor.
3. Public Comments
Mr. James Rivers, 1553 Oldenburg Drive, Awendaw said he was
trying to get an intermediate level youth softball program in the Town. He
said to play at the higher level of play the girls must travel to neighboring
cities and towns as there was not any such program in the Town of Mount
Pleasant.
4. Discussion regarding future of public recreation in Mount
Pleasant
Mr. Gergick said they discussed the vision of the Recreation
Department at the Council Retreat. He said they are looking to diversify
some programs with a focus on the expansion in teen programs. He said
they met with the Youth Council and they discussed interest in esports,
teen only open gym nights, coed athletic social leagues, and other
activities. He said they discussed splitting the age groups with younger
teens and older teens. He said another area was continued expansion in
the public art area.
Mr. DeMoura said the members of the Youth Council were
extraordinarily impressive. He said staff asked that this item to be on the
Recreation Committee

agenda as they had received good feedback from the Committee and
members of Council at the Retreat for the expansion of programs and
diversity along with greater socialization opportunities. He said if
Committee was agreeable, they would like to begin planning in the next
30 to 60 days to see what this may look like going forward.
Mr. Santos said these ideas were all good and we are doing a great
job with the things mentioned. He said there was a push to have travel
tournaments. He said one of the main issues in the past with travel teams
was they were subbed out. He said with the upcoming lacrosse
tournament they can monitor it to see how well it works. He said he would
like the Department to see if there was an opportunity for tournaments.
Mr. Rambo asked what esports was.
Mr. Gergick said esports has become very popular in recreation
departments. He said it was competition gaming. He said it requires a
dedicated space for people to compete online and it requires higher speed
computers.
The Committee continued discussion on the different programs and
added fencing to the softball fields.
Ms. Whitley said after the Retreat where they talked through the
recreation future and she mentioned Youth Council being a good
resource. She thanked Mr. Gergick for following up on that. She said the
esports industry is huge but sees the problem with the initial investment
and the need to have dedicated space. She said even if there was a way
to expand the offerings in the softball realm, she thought providing a
smooth path from Mount Pleasant Recreation into high school sports
should be a mission no matter what the sport.
Mr. Santos said he thought they need to keep travel ball discussion
going. He said the lacrosse tournament and the half marathon was going
to be a test. He said if the Committee does plan something it needs to be
run by the Town of Mount Pleasant as he was not in favor of subbing
anything out.
Staff and Committee continued discussion on softball and
participation numbers for the different ages. They discussed the other
local cities and towns accommodating travel teams. Staff discussed
adding middle school teams for the various sports.

to offer coaches clinics, pitching clinics, and instructional softball.

their direction.
