TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA RECREATION COMMITTEE Monday, March 1, 2021 Municipal Complex, Council Chambers 100 Ann Edwards Lane, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 Minutes Members Present: Gary Santos, Chair; Jake Rambo, G. M. Whitley Staff Present: Eric DeMoura, Steve Gergick 1. Call to order Mr. Santos called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. 2. Approval of Minutes from the February 1, 2021 meeting Ms. Whitley made a motion to approve the minutes of the February 1, 2021 meeting. Mr. Rambo seconded the motion. All were in favor. 3. Public Comments Mr. James Rivers, 1553 Oldenburg Drive, Awendaw said he was trying to get an intermediate level youth softball program in the Town. He said to play at the higher level of play the girls must travel to neighboring cities and towns as there was not any such program in the Town of Mount Pleasant. 4. Discussion regarding future of public recreation in Mount Pleasant Mr. Gergick said they discussed the vision of the Recreation Department at the Council Retreat. He said they are looking to diversify some programs with a focus on the expansion in teen programs. He said they met with the Youth Council and they discussed interest in esports, teen only open gym nights, coed athletic social leagues, and other activities. He said they discussed splitting the age groups with younger teens and older teens. He said another area was continued expansion in the public art area. Mr. DeMoura said the members of the Youth Council were extraordinarily impressive. He said staff asked that this item to be on the Recreation Committee March 1, 2021 Page 2 of 3 agenda as they had received good feedback from the Committee and members of Council at the Retreat for the expansion of programs and diversity along with greater socialization opportunities. He said if Committee was agreeable, they would like to begin planning in the next 30 to 60 days to see what this may look like going forward. Mr. Santos said these ideas were all good and we are doing a great job with the things mentioned. He said there was a push to have travel tournaments. He said one of the main issues in the past with travel teams was they were subbed out. He said with the upcoming lacrosse tournament they can monitor it to see how well it works. He said he would like the Department to see if there was an opportunity for tournaments. Mr. Rambo asked what esports was. Mr. Gergick said esports has become very popular in recreation departments. He said it was competition gaming. He said it requires a dedicated space for people to compete online and it requires higher speed computers. The Committee continued discussion on the different programs and added fencing to the softball fields. Ms. Whitley said after the Retreat where they talked through the recreation future and she mentioned Youth Council being a good resource. She thanked Mr. Gergick for following up on that. She said the esports industry is huge but sees the problem with the initial investment and the need to have dedicated space. She said even if there was a way to expand the offerings in the softball realm, she thought providing a smooth path from Mount Pleasant Recreation into high school sports should be a mission no matter what the sport. Mr. Santos said he thought they need to keep travel ball discussion going. He said the lacrosse tournament and the half marathon was going to be a test. He said if the Committee does plan something it needs to be run by the Town of Mount Pleasant as he was not in favor of subbing anything out. Staff and Committee continued discussion on softball and participation numbers for the different ages. They discussed the other local cities and towns accommodating travel teams. Staff discussed adding middle school teams for the various sports. Recreation Committee March 1, 2021 Page 3 of 3 Mr. DeMoura said they were hearing the desire to accommodate increased competition with softball whether it was tournaments or more opportunities. He said they could incorporate that into some of the other things they discussed. Mr. Gergick said they were working with coaches at the high schools to offer coaches clinics, pitching clinics, and instructional softball. Mr. DeMoura said they plan to bring back a package of ideas to meet their direction. 5. Program/projects update Mr. Gergick said it was the first day of registration for summer camps. He said the Sweetgrass Half Marathon would be May 22 and they have over 200 runners signed up with a cap of 500. First Responder Monument Bell Mr. Gergick gave an update on First Responders Monument at Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park and shared renderings of the monument and the bell. Committee and staff discussed Memorial Waterfront Park and upcoming plans. The plans have been sent to South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and also need to be sent to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
