HISTORICAL COMMISSION
NOVEMBER 11, 2019
MINUTES

Present: Richard Gutowski, Chair, Patrick Morrissey, Co-Chair, Deborah
Sutherland, Courtney Theis, Antonio White, Theresa Gordon.
Staff: Kate Dolan, Lynnette Lynes, Jane Yager-Baumrind
Mr. Gutowski called the meeting to order at 8:00 am.
I. Approval of Agenda
Mr. Morrissey moved to approve the agenda. Ms. Sutherland second the
motion. All in favor.
II. Approval of Minutes
Approval of minutes deferred to next meeting.
III. Public Comment
Ms. Venessa Hill, 1384 Old Brickyard Road, introduced to the Commission
members of the team working on the proposed history and text for the Historical
Markers at Brickyard.
Dr. Eric Poplin, 1978 Blythewood Court, stated his professional background with
archology in South Carolina and Mount Pleasant since the late 1980’s
Mr. Dave Schulte, 2745 Gaston Gate, shared his interest in the history of
Brickyard and Mount Pleasant as well as being the editor of the Brickyard website
and newsletter.
Mr. Morrissey moved to amend the agenda to move discussion of the Brickyard
marker as item IV on the agenda. Ms. Gordon seconded the motion. All in favor.

IV. Historical Marker Committee
1. Brickyard Markers Texts: Forever Chimney and Butterfly Lake
The Commission reviewed the proposed text.
The Commission agreed to table discussion of the marker text so that Ms. Hill
and Mr. Poplin could better review the text.
V. Staff Update
Ms. Dolan reviewed the staff update with the Commission.
VI. Vote on Cresco Award Winner
The Commission agreed through a secret ballot to award Ms. Vanessa Hill the
Cresco Award to be presented at the Town Council Meeting, December 10, 2019.
VII. Vote on NFC Project Proposal
Ms. Sutherland updated the Commission on NFC.
Ms. Sutherland moved to order 30 labels from Celotape at a price of $1.15 to
$1.50. Mr. Patrick Morrissey second the motion. All in favor.
Mr. Morrissey moved to amend the agenda to continue discussion of the
historical marker text at this time. Ms. Gordon second the motion. All in favor.

Mr. Patrick Morrissey moved for approval the Brickyard Historical
Markers text as amended. Ms. Deborah Sutherland second the motion. All
in favor.
IX. Committee Action Items
A. Public Education Committee
1. Black History Month
Mr. Walter G. Brown Jr. updated the Commission on Black History Month.
2. Interest Polling for QFF
Mr. Gutowski and the Commission discussed ways for determining what
topics the public might be interested in for the Quick Fact Fridays (QFF).
B. Special Collection Committee
Mr. Morrissey stated the intern researching Mr. Edmund Jenkins, the town
marshal, will submit her report for the December meeting.
C. Tourism Committee
Ms. Gordon shared with the Commission Charleston County’s official
tourism guide and suggested that it could be used as a resource to create a
similar document for the Town that could be utilized in the Archive Room.
D. Organization and Administration Committee
Ms. Theis updated the Commission that the Commission budget is on One-
Drive for everyone to review as needed.
Mr. Brown asked about the marker damaged at the Friendship AME church. Ms.
Dolan stated it is a state marker and that the Loss Control office is coordinating with
the State for repair.

X. Agenda Items for Next Meeting
Mr. Morrissey asked to have the report from the graduate student on next
month’s agenda.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:19 am.
