TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION FEBRUARY 13, 2020 MINUTES Present: Richard Gutowski, Chair, Patrick Morrissey, Deborah Sutherland, Antonio White, Theresa Gordon, Brian Blalock Absent: Courtney Theis Staff: Kate Dolan, Jane Yager-Baumrind I. Approval of Agenda Ms. Gordon moved to amend the agenda to add discussion of agenda items for next month as item number seven to the agenda. Ms. Sutherland seconded the motion. All in favor. Mr. Morrissey moved for approval of the agenda as amended. Ms. Gordon seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes January Minutes and December Minutes Mr. Gutowski moved to approve the January 2020 minutes with an amendment to add Mr. Morrissey’s letter to the Historic District Preservation Commission. Ms. Gordon seconded the motion. All in favor. Ms. Sutherland abstained. Mr. Morrissey moved for approval of the December 2019 agenda. Ms. Gordon second the motion. All in favor. III. Public Comment Mr. Chris Colman, 118 Pitt Street, shared his opinion on Charleston and Seashore Railway and the proposal for 101 Mary Street to build a dock at the end of Hibben Street. There being no further comments, Mr. Gutowski continued with the agenda. IV. Staff Update Ms. Dolan updated the Commission. Historical Commission February 13, 2020 Page 2 of 3 V. Committee Action Items A. Public Education Committee 1. Update on Black History Month Event 2/22/2020 Mr. Walter Brown reviewed the final Black History Month agenda with the Commission. 2. Discuss 75th Anniversary of H & R Sweet Shop Ms. Dolan reviewed this event with the Commission. 3. Action on April Meeting in School Mr. Gutowski shared with the Commission the April 9th Historical Commission meeting will be held at Laing Middle School. Ms. Gordon moved for approval of the April Historical Commission meeting to be held at Laing Middle School. Ms. Sutherland seconded the motion. All in favor. B. Historical Marker Committee 1. Discuss Historical Marker Request Ms. Dolan discussed a new historical marker with the Commission. C. Special Collection Committee 1. Discuss Archival and Organization of Items in History Room Ms. Dolan reviewed with the Commission the meeting she had with Ms. Theis regarding catalog software for the History Room. 2. Edmund Jenkins Research Mr. Morrissey reviewed the latest on the Edmund Jenkins report. D. Tourism Committee 1. Discussion on Stories and Storytellers Ms. Gordon shared with the Commission about recordings of story tellers and podcasts and working with the public library. Ms. Gordon would like to make these parts of the Commission events. Historical Commission February 13, 2020 Page 3 of 3 2. Discussion on Old Village Walking Tours Ms. Gordon discussed having recordings of the Old Village Walking tours that could be used at Historical Commission events. E. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Budget Update Ms. Dolan stated the updated budget was provided with her staff update. VI. Approval of Revised 2020 Bylaws Ms. Dolan reviewed the bylaws with the Commission. Ms. Gordon moved to accept the bylaws as presented, with the changes to be brought back next month. Ms. Sutherland seconded the motion. All in favor. VII. Discussion of Agenda Items for Next meeting Ms. Gordon moved to have the following items discussed at the next meeting: ➢ Approval of Revised Bylaws ➢ Update on Black History Month ➢ Update on 101 Mary Street ➢ Presentation of Edmund Jenkins Research ➢ Continued Discussion of the 75th Anniversary of the H&R Sweetshop Mr. Morrissey seconded the motion.
