TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION MAY 13, 2021 MINUTES Present: Deborah Sutherland, Chair, Clyde Hopper, Courtney Theis, William Hine, Danielle Cox, Pam Gabriel Absent: Bryan Blalock Staff: Kate Miller, Jane Yager-Baumrind Ms. Sutherland called the meeting to order at 8:05 am. I. Approval of Agenda Ms. Theis moved to approve the agenda. Mr. Hopper seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes –March 11 Meeting and March 24 Special Meeting Ms. Theis moved to approve the minutes. Mr. Hopper seconded the motion. All in favor. III. Introductions for New Members Ms. Sutherland introduced the new members of the commission. IV. Public Comment There being no comments, Ms. Sutherland continued with the agenda. V. Staff Update Ms. Miller reviewed the staff report with the Commission. VI. Committee Action Items A. Public Education Committee 1. Discussion on future projects recommended by HDPC Ms. Miller reviewed this with the Commission. 2. Discuss creation of videos and podcasts on historical events Ms. Miller reviewed this item with the Commission. B. Interpretation and Historical Marker Committee 1. Update on Scanlonville Monument and Park-- NO UPDATE Ms. Miller updated the new members on the Scanlonville Park. 2. Miriam Brown Marker and Unveiling Ceremony Ms. Sutherland shared this event with the Commission. Historical Commission May 13, 2021 Page 2 of 3 3. Discuss Budget for Future Markers Ms. Theis moved to approve reimbursement to Kate Miller for refreshments for the Miriam Brown Ceremony at a cost of $104. Mr. Hopper seconded the motion. All in favor. Mr. Hopper moved to approve the funds for replacement of the marker located at AME Friendship Church. Ms. Theis seconded the motion. All in favor. C. Special Collection Committee 1. Discuss potential oral history projects This item was previously discussed. D. Tourism and Community Outreach Committee 1. Update of participation of Blessing of the Fleet Ms. Miller updated the Commission on this event. Ms. Theis shared the interest from the public to where they can find more historical information and discussed a reprint of the Mount Pleasant book. 2. Discuss French/Spanish Invasion Project Ms. Sutherland asked Kate if she had info from Bryan about this project. Ms. Miller responded. E. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Update on Budget Ms. Theis reviewed the budget with the Commission. 2. Update on Committee assignments and expansion of tasks (Strategic Plan) Ms. Theis shared the document that the members can sign to chair a committee and sub-chair a second committee. F. Black History Month Committee NO REPORT VII. Goodbye Rick, Patrick, and Theresa Ms. Sutherland thanked Mr. Gutowski, Mr. Morrissey, and Ms. Gordon for their service on the Commission and stated that Mr. Gutowski provided a report on the accomplishments during his term on the Commission. Mr. Morrissey noted that the connection between Fort Palmetto and Boone Hall should have appropriate signage once it has been completed. Historical Commission May 13, 2021 Page 3 of 3 VIII. Discussion of Next Month’s Agenda Items The Commission agreed that the following items should be included on next month’s agenda: ➢ future projects ➢ Scanlonville Monument and Park ➢ Oral history ➢ French/Spanish Invasion project ➢ Budget update ➢ Committee Assignment Update There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:15 am.
