TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION OCTOBER 14, 2021 MINUTES Present: Deborah Sutherland, Chair, Clyde Hopper, Bryan Blalock, Courtney Theis, William Hine, Danielle Cox, Pam Gabriel (entered at 8:05 am). Staff: Kate Miller, Aaron Bennett, Lynnette Lynes Ms. Sutherland called the meeting to order at 8:00 am. I. Approval of Agenda Mr. Hopper moved for approval of the agenda. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes – September 9, 2021 Meeting Ms. Cox moved for approval of the minutes. Mr. Hopper seconded the motion. All in favor. III. Public Comment There being no comments, Ms. Sutherland continued with the agenda. IV. Staff Update Ms. Miller reviewed her staff update with the Commission. V. Committee Action Items A. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Action and Update Budget (vote on funds for dry cleaning and shadow box for letter jacket) Ms. Gabriel entered at this time (8:05 am). Ms. Theis moved for approval of cleaning the jacket. Mr. Blalock seconded the motion. All in favor. The Commission agreed to look at other options for the shadow box. Historical Commission October 14, 2021 Page 2 of 3 B. Historical Markers and Interpretation Committee 1. Discussion and Action on Future 6 Mile Historical Marker Ms. Gabriel reviewed the draft text with the Commission. The Commission agreed to defer approval of the text to next month to work on additional text and to invite members from the Six Mile community to attend the next meeting. 2. Update on the Grace Bridge and signage Ms. Gabriel reviewed the project with the Commission. Ms. Miller stated that there could be a grant available to help with cleaning of the piece of the bridge. It was noted that a SAM ID would be needed to apply for the grant. C. Special Collection and Research Committee 1. Discuss Oral Histories Mr. Hopper updated the Commission on the oral history projects. He stated that he is still working to schedule interviews. 2. Museum Proposal Mr. Hopper stated that the committee is still working on the museum proposal. D. Tourism and Community Outreach Committee 1. Discuss French/Spanish Invasion Project Mr. Blalock stated that there was no update on this project as he is waiting to hear back from Mr. Bostic. 2. Discuss Military Tour Mr. Blalock stated that he is finalizing the military tour. Historical Commission October 14, 2021 Page 3 of 3 3. Discuss Christmas Parade Mr. Blalock stated that the Christmas parade application has been submitted. He suggested that there should be a banner that provides information on how to access the history app. They also suggested that a handout could be done as well. E. Marketing Committee Ms. Cox updated the Commission on the marketing. Ms. Sutherland stated that they are continuing to focus on the settlement communities with the Quick Fact Friday posts. F. Black History Month Committee 1. Discuss Black History Month Mr. Hine updated the Commission on the progress of the Black History Month events. VI. Discussion of Next Month’s Agenda Items The Commission agreed that the following items should be discussed at the next meeting: ➢ Shadow box options ➢ Six Mile marker ➢ Grace bridge ➢ Discussion and possible Vote on Cresco Award recipient ➢ Oral histories ➢ Museum proposal ➢ Christmas parade funding ➢ Approval of military tour ➢ Black history month There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:49 am.
